The National Overseas Scholarship scheme is a financial aid offered by the central government for low-income students from scheduled castes, denotified nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes, traditional artisans and landless agricultural labourers to pursue higher studies abroad, specifically masters or PhD courses.
As per the latest notification shared by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, registration for the National Overseas Scholarship started on 15 February 2023. Candidates who are eligible for the scholarships must submit their applications on the official website, i.e. nosmse.gov.in.
The notification further revealed that the NOS portal will remain open for 45 days starting from February 15, this year, i.e. till 31 March 2023 mid-night (12 AM IST). Candidates interested in availing of the scholarship opportunity should submit their application during this 45-day period.

Eligibility Criteria for National Overseas Scholarship
Those planning to apply for the scholarship must satisfy the following eligibility criteria for the National Overseas Scholarship.

Candidates must have obtained a minimum of 60% or equivalent grade in the qualifying exams.

For a Master’s, candidates must have a valid Bachelor’s degree, meanwhile, for a PhD, candidates must have a Master’s degree.

Candidates must provide the mark sheets with only a CGPA representing the performance of the candidate. They must also provide the conversion formula used by the university to convert the marks into CGPA.

Those failing to provide the mark sheets and CGPA conversion formula will have their applications rejected.

Candidates should not be more than 35 years old as of April 1, 2023.

To be eligible, candidates must also come under the income ceiling, which has been set at INR 8 lakhs per annum from all sources of income in a family.

The income certificate should be issued by a Revenue Officer, not below the rank of ‘Tehsildar’.

Students will also be required to submit the ITR(s) of the family members as well.

Apart from these, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have also defined other requirements and guidelines outlining the parameters defining a family/family income, and other factors affecting a candidate’s eligibility for the course.

Documents Required for National Overseas Scholarship
It should be noted that the candidates interested in applying for the course must also provide the following documents needed for the National Overseas Scholarship:

Aadhar Card

Class 10th Board Certificate

Caste Certificate

Candidate’s Photograph

A scanned copy of the Candidate’s Signature

The candidate’s current/permanent address proof.

Qualifying Degree or Provisional Certificate.

Mark sheet of the qualifying examination

A valid document as proof of admission to a foreign university.

Income certificate or document of all the family members
-
An ITR acceptance document
-
In the case of an employed candidate, a NOC from the employer.

In case of a gap of more than 6 months after completing the qualifying degree, a gap certificate is required.
All interested candidates are advised to provide the needed documents at the time of application and follow all the procedures that have been defined by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
