History, Affiliations & Rankings
The oldest institute for higher education in the United States, Harvard University came into existence in the year 1636 as a result of voting by the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony. In the year 1638, the institute was renamed after the first benefactor of the college, John Harvard of Charlestown who left his half estate and a library for the Institution. Today, Harvard University is globally reputed due to its academic programmes, which are of the highest pedigree. Founded as a clergy training school, the Institute revamped its admission policy during the 20th century, which opened a gateway for a diverse pool of applicants.
