Bristol University was established as a degree-granting public research university in 1909 by the virtue of a Royal Charter. Originally founded as Merchant Venturers School in 1595 and University College, Bristol in 1876, it is one of the nine civic UK universities established in the 19th century. This makes it a red-brick Russell Group research university in Bristol. In the present times, it is an employer to fellows of reputed British Academies and has 9 Nobel Laureates as its alumni. According to a Times Higher Education (THE) analysis, the University of Bristol is one of the top five UK institutions for research and is also a member of the Russell Group of UK Research-Intensive Universities.Additionally, it is associated with Russell Group, Coimbra Group, Worldwide Universities Network, universities UK, PEGASUS, SETsquared, GW4, Sutton13 and EUA, for both academic and research purposes.

Bristol University houses famed buildings within its campus, such as the Wills Memorial Building, Royal Fort House, University of Bristol Botanic Garden, the Victoria Rooms, Goldney Gardens, Burwalls, Senate House and HH Wills Physics Laboratory.
