Deakin University was established as a university in 1974 in Victoria, Australia by virtue of the Deakin University Act, 1974. In order to establish the university, State College of Victoria, Geelong and the Gordon Institute of Technology were merged. The first enrollment of the university came in 1977. In 1990 and 1991, Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education and Victoria College, respectively, were merged within the university under the Dawkins Education Reforms. Deakin University presently has academic affiliations with ATN, ASAIHL and Australian National Business Schools.Each year, more than 53,000 students get enrolled in various programmes offered at the university.
Deakin University provides undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees through 11 schools including Deakin Business School, Deakin Law School;Deakin University School of Medicine;School of Nursing andMidwifery, among others,under the four faculties of Arts and Education, Business and Law, Health, and Science, Engineering and Built Environment. Overall, the university offers more than 100 bachelor'sand around 150 master's degreecourses.Deakin University has six research institutes and 13 strategic research centres andhas been in frequent association with Frank Costa, Lindsay Fox, Brett Lee, Denis Napthine and Jeff Rowley.
