What's Next After Getting Your GMAT Scores?

GMAT Results and Statistics

The best part about GMAT 2023 results is that you may check them as soon as the exam is over. You will be given the choice of accepting or rejecting the non-official result at the end of the exam. Within 20 days, the official GMAT Test result 2023 may be retrieved from your GMAT account on the GMAT website.

What are GMAT Statistics?

Almost 20 years ago, the average GMAT score for elite B-schools was about 600. Yet, the demand for the MBA programme has skyrocketed in recent years. As a result, many more people apply to these institutions, which implies that the average GMAT admission score rises year after year. It is vital to remember that top institutions assess not just GMAT test results, but also overall positive attributes such as diversity, uncommon accomplishment or success, and so on. Because of these characteristics, many candidates get accepted despite having a lower GMAT score.

If you lack any of these characteristics, you will most likely need to score above 730 (the 99th percentile) to be considered for admission to a top-ten business school.

The average GMAT score for elite MBA programmes at world-class universities is typically in the 700-730 area. A flawless 800 on the GMAT, on the other hand, is not difficult to achieve.

Below is a table with the marks necessary to obtain an understanding of the comparison score percentile, marks of each part, and excellent GMAT score:

GMAT Focus Edition Scoring System

The new GMAT Focus Edition is expected to release in the latter half of 2023. There will be changes in the scoring pattern. The scoring system of GMAT Focus Edition is between 205 and 805 with 10-point increments. So the candidates will get a number that ends in five which means that if they get a score of 655, the next highest score is 665).

The GMAT Focus Edition will have three parts: each having equal weightage. Scores of each section will be offered individually whereas, in the normal GMAT exam, students will receive only one overall score. The scores of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Data Insights range from 60 to 90.

There are three determining factors for the scores of each section and they are:

  • The number of questions one responds to.

  • If the responses are accurate or inaccurate.

  • Criteria of the questions they answered including their complexity.

The Official Score Report will also contain a percentile score along with total score and subsection scores. This will help them to get an idea of the proportion of test-takers, the students have outperformed.

The GMAT Focus Edition participants will get more comprehensive and in-depth performance insights in their final result report. The time they have spent reading through and revising the questions will also be reflected in the performance insight report.

How to Get GMAT Score Reports?

You may see your unofficial GMAT result right away after finishing the exam. Your Official GMAT Score Report will be available in your mba.com account within 7 business days after finishing your exam. However, it may take up to 20 business days in some cases to get your GMAT total scores. Here is how you can access your GMAT Score reports:

Unofficial Score Report

  • Immediately after completing the exam, four of the five scores: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Integrated Reasoning and the total scores (based on the Quantitative and Verbal sections) will be shown.

  • Two minutes will be given to accept or cancel them. In case you do not make a decision, the scores will automatically be cancelled.

  • If you accept the score at the centre, you will get a printout of the same which will include your Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, and Total Scores. This will help you decide whether you want to retake the exam or not.

Score Reports Received Within Three Weeks After Test Date/GMAT Official Score Report

  • GMAC will send a notification via email that your official scores are ready. It will include instructions to access the report.

  • The Official Score Report will have scores from the Analytical Writing Assessment section along with your unofficial score report, GMAT percentile rankings, your personal information and past GMAT scores.

  • During your registration, you would be required to select up to five schools to send your official GMAT score reports to. You may select additional schools by paying an additional fee.

  • Your Official Score Reports will include copies of your essays and your digital photograph, which will be issued to you after making a request.

  • You will be allowed to cancel your scores on test day or within 72 hours of your scheduled exam time, for a fee.

Enhanced GMAT Score Report

You can purchase an enhanced score report which will provide personal insights by question type, pacing, area of focus and actionable information to have a better understanding of your performance.

How to Get GMAT Online Score Report?

The GMAT Online Exam does not presently provide a downloaded version of the Online score report. Keep a note that a screenshot of your official account's score is not regarded as an official score report. Please follow the steps below to view your total score to send it to business schools:

  • Log in to your mba.com My Account.

  • Click on Send Score option.

  • Click the Send Score button for the exam score you want to send.

  • Enter the name of the University, School or location in the text box.

  • Click on the Search option.

  • Select the schools/programs of your choice, and submit.

  • You will be required to make a payment and finish the checkout procedure if you have already utilised your free score reports or if the 48-hour timeframe has passed.

The business schools or score users can also select where they want their GMAT results. The receiver of the GMAT score can also select whether they wish to get the scores electronically or on paper.

Getting GMAT Scores Online

The GMAT's computerised score-reporting system is free, secure, and simple to use. Its simple interface requires no extra training, and it allows business schools to retrieve accessible GMAT results whenever they want—daily, weekly, or monthly. It even allows them to look for a certain candidate.

This also offers the best and most efficient way for institutions to get precisely the score reports they want for application review, and it includes online guides, help-desk support, and hands-on assistance to help them fully utilise its powerful features. It also contributes to the decrease in paper waste.

Getting GMAT Scores on Paper

Postal mail is another option for receiving printed paper GMAT exam reports. Electronic and paper reports include the same information; but, owing to processing and transit time, print reports may arrive at a later date.

How Long does it Take to Get GMAT Scores?

After passing the exam, you will see your unofficial score on your computer screen, but you will have to wait a few days for your official result. Whether you took the GMAT online or remotely, you will receive your official scores within seven business days after finishing the exam. For a test centre-based GMAT exam, this time limit is extended to 20 calendar days (from the exam date).

Your results are made accessible to you via one of the following methods:

  • Your score will be mailed to your registered mailing address.

  • Pearson VUE (a global organisation that provides computer-based solutions for administering competitive tests) sends you an email with a link to examine your results.

  • Your score is available in a user-friendly, downloadable, and printable format on your mba.com account (the official site for taking GMAT exams).

How to Send GMAT Scores to B-Schools?

GMAT scores are accepted by about 2,300 business management institutions worldwide for admission to 7,000+ graduate programmes. Hence, if you want to get into one of these top business schools, you should start studying and enrolling for the exam right now. When you register for the GMAT, the registration fee covers the cost of sending your scores to up to five institutions.

As a result, before registering for the exam or taking it at the test centre, you should develop a list of your top five school's desired programmes (selected from the database of the official GMAT website). By doing so, you provide these institutions access to view your acceptable results that were transferred to them online.

Also, after you receive the unofficial GMAT results, you have the option to analyse your score and decide whether to keep it or cancel it. You just have two minutes to make this selection; if you go over the time limit, the score is instantly cancelled. If you are satisfied with your score (you have met or surpassed your stated objective for the programmes you have chosen), you may accept it and submit it to your top five institutions for the programmes you want to pursue.

Just choose the required programmes and institutions and click the 'Report the score' button, and your GMAT scores will be sent straight to the schools you applied for when you registered for the GMAT. The GMAT score is valid for five years after it is issued. Furthermore, the scorecard sent to the B-schools includes just your acceptable GMAT results from the five years of testing.

How to Cancel GMAT Score?

If a test taker wants to cancel their GMAT score, they have two options: cancel at the test facility on test day or cancel within 72 hours of the test appointment. Let us investigate both of these processes.

On the Test Day

When you finish your GMAT at a test centre, you will view your Unofficial Score Report on the computer screen, which includes your Quant, Verbal, and Integrated Reasoning section scores, as well as your GMAT Total Score, as well as the percentile rankings associated with each of those scores. The computer will give you two minutes to select whether to accept or reject your exam results. If you do not make a selection within the 2-minute time limit, the computer will cancel your points. The good news is that if you choose to cancel your GMAT score, you will not be charged a GMAT fee for the same.

If you cancel your GMAT score at the test centre, you will not receive a printout of your unofficial score report, and your cancelled score will not appear on your Official Score Report, making it inaccessible to any business schools to whom you send your GMAT result.

After the Test Day

Test takers can also cancel a GMAT score after they leave the testing centre, as long as they do so within 72 hours of the exam's start time. So, if you take the GMAT at noon on a Monday, you must cancel your exam score by noon on Thursday.

  • Simply go to your official account to cancel your GMAT score after you leave the exam centre.

  • Keep in mind that depending on where your test centre is situated, the option to cancel your score may take up to 24 hours to display in your account.

  • So, there is no need to panic if you log into your account an hour after your exam and are unable to cancel your score yet.

Cancelling your score online after your exam costs around USD 25, however, having the freedom to cancel later is worth the extra money for some test-takers. In addition, if you purchase an Additional Score Report within 72 hours of your exam, you will no longer be able to cancel your score online for that exam.

Note: Cancelling a GMAT Online exam score is not currently possible. Although a GMAT Online score cannot be cancelled, test takers have complete control over which GMAT result they wish to send.

Reinstating GMAT Scores After Cancelling

  • Students can reinstate their GMAT scores after cancelling them for a fee. The same can be done by logging into their mba.com account.

  • Cancelled scores can be reinstated up to four years and 11 months from the exam date.

  • If a GMAT score is reinstated, the score report will be sent to the initial list of b-schools selected on test day. The same cannot be modified although one may be able to view it.

  • Additional Score Reports can be purchased to send the reinstated scores to other schools.

How to Reinstate GMAT Scores?

GMAT score reinstatement can be done online or over the phone. Test takers can access their official website accounts or call the GMAC customer support centre in their location. The fee for online score reinstatement is USD 50, while phone score reinstatement is USD 60. For the reinstatement of GMAT results, only credit cards are accepted. Reinstated scores are normally available five to seven days after the request is submitted, although processing might take up to 20 days.

New Cancellation and Reinstatement Policies

GMAC's new GMAT score cancellation and reinstatement policies are far more friendly to test takers than previous methods. Prior to 2011, students may only cancel GMAT scores at the exam centre, without previously viewing unofficial GMAT results.

When selecting whether or not to cancel scores, students were left to depend on their own evaluations of their performance. Reinstatement of scores was only allowed for 60 days following the exam date. Cancelled scores were traditionally denoted on score reports with the letter "C." The 2016 score cancellation/reinstatement processes provide test takers with a far broader choice of informed score reporting alternatives, and these modifications have been well appreciated.

Details in GMAT Official Score Report

As previously stated, there are two primary types of GMAT score reports. As soon as you finish the exam, you will receive your unofficial GMAT score report. Except for the analytical writing assessment, your unofficial GMAT score report includes your unofficial GMAT result for each section of the exam. After completing the exam, you will receive your official score report within 20 calendar days. Your official score report contains your official results for each section of the exam. Your GMAT score report includes the following information:

  • Total scaled score on a scale from 200 to 800
  • Verbal scaled score on a scale from 0 to 60
  • Quantitative scaled score on a scale from 0 to 60
  • Analytical Writing Assessment score on a scale from 0 to 6
  • Integrated Reasoning score on a scale from 1 to 8

Apart from the above-mentioned information, the GMAT official score report also consists of some additional information like:

  • GMAT percentile rankings
  • Digital photograph
  • Personal data provided during registration (such as contact number, undergraduate university, GPA, intended graduate study and more)
  • Scores from GMAT exams taken within the past 5 years
  • Your unofficial score report

How to Get Additional Score Reports (ASR)?

You may choose an ASR in any of the following situations:

  • On the day of the exam, you did not transmit your unofficial results to any school.

  • You desire to send scores to more than the five recommended colleges you have selected.

  • You intend to submit restored grades to other institutions.

You can buy your ASR online, via e-mail or fax, or by contacting your local GMAT Customer Care number. Each extra report is USD 28 plus an additional USD 10 if ordered over the phone.

An ASR takes approximately 5 working days to get. If you wish to send an ASR to a school, you must first wait 20 days for your official GMAT results before placing an order for an ASR. You must then wait a further five days (as previously said, it takes five days) to receive and send your ASR to the selected institution. If you cancel your score during the specified cancellation period (72 hours) or if you just reinstated your score, you cannot purchase an ASR (for at least one month on account of the reinstatement processing time).

GMAT Score Calculator 2023

The GMAT total score calculator calculates the overall GMAT score by converting the raw score of each part to a scaled score. Each component of the GMAT syllabus has a distinct grading mechanism. Furthermore, the scoring ranges for these parts differ. Before you can comprehend how the GMAT section score calculator works, you must first understand the GMAT score breakdown:

GMAT Exam Sections

GMAT Raw Score Range

Number of Questions

How the Section is Scored?

Integrated Reasoning

1-8

12

The number of correct answers given determines the score.

Verbal Reasoning

6-51

36

The number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions answered are graded.

Quantitative Reasoning

6-51

31

The number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions answered are graded.

Analytical Writing Assessment

0.0-6.0

1

Machine algorithms are used to grade the essays, which were then reviewed by expert essay raters.

Note: The scoring range for the overall GMAT is 200-800, and the raw scores acquired in GMAT verbal and GMAT quant are converted to reach the total score.

How are the GMAT Total Scores Calculated?

The GMAT is not a pass/fail examination. It consists of four sections and yields five scores: one from each section (separated into a scaled score and percentile rank), and a fifth GMAT total score calculated from the Quantitative and Verbal sections combined. You will receive the following scores in total:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment (on a scale of 0 to 6)

  • Integrated Reasoning (on a scale of 1 to 8)

  • Verbal Reasoning (on a scale of 0 to 60)

  • Quantitative Reasoning (on a scale of 0 to 60)

  • Total score – Verbal and Quant together (on a scale of 200 to  800)

As different students will encounter questions of varying difficulty, it would be unfair to grade them based on the number of questions they miss. Instead, the difficulty level of the questions you miss is the primary determinant of your GMAT score. Assume you miss 12 simple questions scattered throughout your GMAT quant section. The test will never adapt upwards, and you may receive a quantitative subsection score in the 20s or 30s. But suppose you miss 12 questions again, but this time you only miss difficult questions; you could now score a 47Q or even a 48Q despite making the same number of errors.

The GMAT verbal section works similarly to the GMAT quant section, though the verbal section is more sensitive to the number of errors. The reason for this is simple: writing extremely difficult verbal questions is difficult. On quant, the test can more easily adapt up and down. In the end, your GMAT section subscores are calculated based on the difficulty level of the questions you miss, not the number of questions you miss.

What are GMAT Percentile Rankings?

Percentile ranking compares your performance to that of other exam takers. This annual ranking is based on data from test takers over the previous three years. A percentile ranking of 90% implies that you fared better than 90% of the test takers, while 10% of the test takers performed similarly well or better than you. As a result, a high score corresponds to a higher percentile ranking, and vice versa. The most recent percentile rankings are based on data gathered between 2014 and 2017. This means that even if you have the same score, your percentile ranking may change significantly when the new rankings are released in the following years.

According to GMAC, because of the GMAT's score preview feature, which began in 2014, candidates now have the option to cancel GMAT results that do not match the level of their expectations. As a result, the average GMAT score that candidates transmit to business schools has increased, resulting in greater GMAT averages across b-schools. As more candidates report greater scores, percentile rankings have fallen.

The table below contains the most recent data on overall GMAT scores and percentile rankings. A total GMAT score of 730, for example, represents the 95th percentile. So you outperformed 95% of GMAT exam takers, which is commendable. However, with a percentile ranking of less than 60% and 40% of candidates scoring higher than you, your score would be significantly less competitive.
