An essential component of the university application process is the TOEFL scores. The universities establish the TOEFL exam score as a suitable benchmark for the applicants.

With a high TOEFL score, you may demonstrate that you have a solid grasp of the English language. Results from the TOEFL are also used to prove English language competency while requesting a visa. Therefore, it is critical to comprehend how TOEFL scores are assessed, what a good TOEFL score is, and how to submit them to the college or university of your choice. The TOEFL exam results and other pertinent information are covered in full on this exam page below.

About TOEFL Results and Scores 2023

Each section on the TOEFL is scored on a scale of 0-30, which are then added together for a total score of 0-120. Further, the score range is broken down into four or five proficiency levels to measure the candidate's proficiency for the skill accurately. There is, however, no passing or failing score for the TOEFL exam 2023 as it entirely depends on the university or agency and their own score requirements.

The TOEFL 2023 is a top-tier English language proficiency test that is solely graded by a centralised scoring network. Within six days after the test, the TOEFL scores are made public and TOEFL score validity is for two years following when the exam was taken. Prior to the test, ETS enables applicants to designate the universities that will receive their individual TOEFL scorecards. However, following the test, applicants may also submit additional TOEFL score reports.

The TOEFL results will be accepted by more than 11,000 universities across 190 countries. Dublin City University, Chester University, Auburn University, University of South Florida, and George Mason University are just a few of the global institutions that recognise the TOEFL scores.

How Is the TOEFL Scored?

A TOEFL 2023 test is never scored at a TOEFL test centre but only under a centralised scoring system. While the Speaking and Writing sections are scored by a combination of multiple highly-trained humans and AI evaluators, the Reading and Listening sections are scored by a computer.

All evaluation procedures have been designed to ensure consistency and a true reflection of the abilities of the candidate and do away with the bias of an evaluator that may be possible in face-to-face interviews.

How to Tell If You Passed the TOEFL?

ETS has not set any passing or failing scores for the TOEFL test. Each institution sets its own TOEFL score requirement, individually for each course, which a candidate must meet in order to be eligible and obtain an unconditional admission offer.

How To Get TOEFL Scores?

Through ETS Account

After approximately six days of taking the test, TOEFL 2023 scores will be made available to the candidate on the official website, for which an email will be sent to the registered email address. Candidates can access their account online or through the official TOEFL app.

The same scores will be considered valid for two years. TOEFL test-takers can download and take a printout of the TOEFL 2023 scores for future reference.

By Mail

A TOEFL candidate can also request a printed copy of their score report before sitting for the test. Their TOEFL 2023 scores will be mailed within 11 days from the date of taking the test, although delivery times may vary according to the candidate’s address.

Sending the TOEFL Scores to Universities

Before the Test

All TOEFL test-takers can send their TOEFL 2023 scores before taking the test. The TOEFL exam fee that one pays while registering for the test includes up to four free TOEFL 2023 score reports that can be sent to the different TOEFL score recipients, which the candidates can select before the test. ETS also allows candidates to add or delete the score recipients through their ETS account, until 10 p.m. (local test centre time) on the day before their test.

When adding any institution on the list of recipients before the test, candidates would not be able to request a score review of their Speaking and Writing sections.

Score delivery times may differ based on how a candidate’s designated score recipients receive scores (all times approximate):

  • ETS Data Manager: 6–8 days

  • Scorelink Service: 8–10 days

  • Postal Mail: 9–11 days plus mailing time. Allow an additional 4–6 weeks for mail delivery to other locations.

After the Test

After sitting for the TOEFL 2023 test, candidates can also choose to send their scores through their respective ETS accounts, by fax or by mail, after paying an additional fee of USD 20 per institution/agency.

Through Your ETS Account

  • Candidates can log into their ETS account online or through the TOEFL official app, where they can use the "Send Additional Score Reports" option.

  • Pay the fee using credit/debit card, e-check or PayPal.

  • Score reports are usually mailed within three to four days after receiving the request.

By Fax

  • ETS provides a TOEFL iBT Additional Score Report Request Form (PDF) which a candidate is required to fill out.

  • The duly filled out form along with the candidate’s appointment number and credit/debit card information should be faxed to +1-610-290-8972.

  • In case a candidate wishes to send the same fax more than once, they can write "DUPLICATE" in large letters on the form to avoid extra charges on their credit/debit card.

  • Their TOEFL score reports will then be mailed within 10 business days after the request is received.

By Mail

Candidates must complete the TOEFL iBT Additional Score Report Request Form (PDF). The score reports will then be mailed within 10 business days after the request is received.

All candidates opting for this method are required to mail it with the required payment to the following address:

TOEFL Percentile

Your TOEFL percentile score compares your results to those of the other test-takers. In more concrete words, your TOEFL score percentile will be a figure that represents the percentage of test takers that you outperformed. Given this, your percentile shows how well you performed on the test in comparison to other applicants while your TOEFL score reflects how well you answered numerous prompts and queries.

Remember this, the higher your percentile, the more test takers you have outperformed, and consequently, your TOEFL score will be more impressive. The TOEFL percentile is shown in the table below as a percentage of the TOEFL composite or total score:
