The University of Waterloo (commonly known as Waterloo, UW, or UWaterloo) is a public research university with its main campus in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The university was founded in 1956 as the Waterloo College Associate Faculties, a semi-autonomous entity of Waterloo College, then an affiliate of the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo is a publicly funded research university and a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. Other affiliations are ATS, CARL, CBIE, CIS, CUP, CUSID, Fields Institute, IAU, U15, and UC. According to the US News Rankings 2020 edition, UW is ranked 217th among the Best Global Universities in the world and 9th in Canada.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Waterloos main campus is spread across 1,000 acres of land. It also manages three satellite campuses in Canada and four affiliated university colleges namely the Conrad Grebal University College, Renison University College, St. Jeromes University, and St. Pauls University College. In addition, the university has satellite campuses in nearby Cambridge, Kitchener and Stratford. The university has six main academic divisions - Applied Health Sciences, Arts, Engineering, Environment, Math and Science. More than 120 of Waterloo's undergraduate programs offer a co-op option. The most sought after courses at UW are Mathematics, English, Engineering, Computer Science, Business and Health Sciences.

Accomplishments & Alumni

The University of Waterloo is consistently recognized for its achievements - nationally, internationally and provincially. A few of the accomplishments of the Universitys faculty include winning Premiers Catalyst Awards, Ontario Professional Engineers Awards, etc. A sampling of the university's research institutions includes the Water Institute, the Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research and the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre. Waterloo is a community of more than 219,000 alumni who have had an influence on the university and the world. Prominent alumni of the UW include Rupi Kaur, Steve Smith, Kevin OLeary, Mike Lazaridis, and Heather Moyse.

With 44% of graduate female students and 48% of undergraduate students, Waterloo supports equality for all students regardless of gender or sexuality. The University of Waterloo is a popular destination for higher studies among international students as more than 20% of undergraduate students and 40% of graduate students are international students coming from 152 countries. Many of the university's students participate in a co-op programme that allows them to alternate academic terms with terms spent in the workforce.

University of Waterloo Scholarships for International Students

At the University of Waterloo, The Student Awards & Financial Aid Office (SAFA) is responsible for scholarships to both domestic and international students. 

University of Waterloo Scholarships for Undergraduate International Students

Waterloo Entrance Awards

The university offers a great number of entrance scholarships to students who are in financial need. All applicants will be considered for the scholarship when they apply. However, the scholarships are available for full-time first-year students enrolled in a degree programme which would begin in September of any given year. Some of the Waterloo entrance awards include Admanski Entrance Scholarship, Amrik Bhogal Undergraduate Scholarship, Al Sandilands Entrance Scholarship, Arthur F. Church Mechanical Engineering Scholarships, Arts Alumni Entrance Scholarship, and many more. 

Value: Minimum INR 73,034

President’s Scholarship of Distinction

Value: 

  • INR 1,46,069 Entrance Scholarship

  • INR 1,09,551 International Experience Award and/or INR 1,09,551 Research Award

Eligibility: 

  • Must have an early May admission average of over 95%.

  • Must be admitted to a full-time first-year degree program at the university.

  • Must be beginning postsecondary studies at the university for the first time in September.

  • No separate application required.

International Student Entrance Scholarships

Value: 

  • Several at INR 7,30,345 each

Eligibility: 

  • Must be admitted to the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree program.

  • Must have obtained at least 90% in 10+2.

  • Contests or assignments may be used to award scholarships to applicants to certain programs.

President’s Scholarship

Value: 

  • INR 1,46,069

Eligibility: 

  • Must have an early May admission average of 90% to 94%.

  • Must be admitted to a full-time first-year degree program at the university.

  • Must be beginning postsecondary studies at the university for the first time in September.

Waterloo Merit Scholarship

Value: 

  • INR 54,230

Eligibility: 

  • Must have an early May admission average of 85% to 89.9%.

  • Must be admitted to a full-time first-year degree program at the university.

  • Must be beginning postsecondary studies at the university for the first time in September.

Applicable Disciplines:

Engineering, Computer Science and two more.

Waterloo Scholarships for Current Undergraduate International Students

These scholarships, bursaries, and other awards are exclusively for current undergraduate international students at the university. Amongst more than 500 such scholarships, few of them are A.B. McKie Memorial Scholarship, Anil K. Gandhi Memorial Scholarship, Ella Dinoi International Experience Award, Equitable Life Scholarship in Actuarial Science. It is to be noted that the value of these awards may vary and also be programme-specific.

Note: The university also offers additional scholarships based on faculty/program.

University of Waterloo Scholarships for Graduate and Postdoctoral International Students

International Master's (IMSA) and International Doctoral Student Awards (IDSA)

This scholarship is available for any international student registered in a research-based graduate programme at the university. The student must meet the academic requirements and not have pending probationary admission requirements, or be receiving external funding simultaneously.

International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE)

IMAE is awarded to international students enrolled in a master’s research programme at the university. The INR 1,82,586-worth award will be granted every term for a maximum of five terms. Eligible students will be nominated by faculties based on their academic excellence.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)

Funded by the provincial government, the scholarship is for masters and doctoral students from different parts of the world. This merit-based scholarship is available for students studying any discipline at the university.

Value: INR  8,47,950

Applicable Disciplines: Engineering, Computer Science, Business

University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship

Value: 

  • INR 54,230

Eligibility: 

  • Must be an international graduate student registered for a full time Master's or Doctoral program.

  • Must have obtained minimum 80% cumulative average in the current program or over the last two full-time academic years.

Applicable Disciplines:

Engineering, Computer Science and three more.
