Victorian Govt Announces $33.4 Million Package to Support Int'l Education Sector

Victorian Government has released a new package worth $33.4 million to support international students enrolled in higher education in the universities of Victoria. The fund will support universities in welcoming international students returning to Australia in 2021.

As universities in Australia are trying to restructure their plans to deliver courses in the best possible ways and support its students amid the COVID-19 pandemic,the Victorian Government has announced a package of $33.4 million to support policies and programmes for the international education sector of the State.

As the International students in Victoria play an important role in the economy of the state, the fund has been announced to re-establish the position of Victoria as the top destination for international students in Australia.As per 2019 data, Victoria accounts for 46% of the total international student enrolment in Australia and supports around 80,000 jobs.The Victoria Scholarship Program will encourage international students to enrol in universities of Victoria for the upcoming sessions.

The funds will be used to welcome international students as they will return to Victoria, to cover the Pathway to Victoria Scholarship Program, support Study Melbourne Entrepreneurship Program, to create Study Melbourne Hubs located in strategic offshore locations and also for International Research Fund. The package will also provide grants for public universities and TAFEs across Victoria for students enrolled in intensive English language courses.

The President and Vice-Chancellor of Monash University,Professor Margaret Gardner AC said that the new package released by the government shows the concern of Victoria towards international students and the investment will highlight the quality of education in Victoria and attract more international students.

He further said that Monash University has been working in collaboration with the Victorian Government to support international students financially and meet their challenges throughout the pandemic and the university is now ready to welcome students to campuses and attract talented students to take part in the university's education and research programme in 2021.

Monash will also collaborate with Global Victoria to develop five Study Melbourne Hubs to support international students transit from online classes to face-to-face learning.

Professor Abid Khan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Global Engagement) of Monash revealed that the Study Melbourne Hubs is an initiative which will allow international students to come together to study, meet new friends and connect with some of the top tech companies, educators, researchers and industry partners in Australia.

He further said that Monash is delighted to partner with the Victorian Government and the International Education team at Global Victoria on the Pathway to Victoria Scholarship Programme to support students not only in their learning phase but and also help them succeed at a professional level.
