The Australian Border Force Commissioner has granted exemption to more than 1050 international students who were earlier banned from international travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A spokesperson from the Australian Border Force said that the permission will be granted to only those students who will have evidence of the compelling case and meet the eligibility criteria.
The exemption is mainly for students who are in their final year of studies in medical, nursing, dental or allied health-related courses at various Australian universities. Also, students who have confirmed placement at an Australian hospital or healthcare centres are exempted from travel restriction.

Vicki Thomson, the chief executive of Group of Eights said that it is important that medical students should be allowed to enter Australia as restriction will impact the number of doctors needed in the system in coming years and there will be a shortfall of healthcare professionals.
One of the spokesmen of an Australian university said that some PhD students may also be exempted from the travel ban based on the research work.So far, around 210,000 international travellers have been exempted from travelling to Australia. In the coming days, the government is planning to bring more Australians and international students. South Australia is also planning to bring up to 300 students in pilot soon.
