The US Embassy in Uruguay has recently announced their final call to increase the visa processing visa for selective US nonimmigrant visa applications (NIV) including the Border Crossing Card (BCC) processing fees for Mexican citizens aged 15 and above. The revised fees were published in the Federal Register on March 28, 2023, and it is said to come into effect starting May 30, 2023.

In addition to other non-petition-based NIVs including student visas and exchange visitor visas, the fee for visitor visas for business or tourism (B1/B2s and BCCs category) will rise from USD 160 to USD 185. The majority of non-petition NIV fees were last revised in 2012, and some other NIV fees were modified in 2014.

Some petition-based US temporary workers' nonimmigrant visas such as H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories will now cost USD 205 instead of USD 190. Treaty traders, investors, and applicants in E category speciality occupations will now pay a fee of USD 315 as opposed to the previous USD 205 amount.

Following performing a survey of the cost of these services, NIV tariffs are defined based on the actual expenses associated with offering NIV services. The Department estimates the annual cost of delivering consular services, including visa services, using the Activity-Based Costing (ABC) technique.

This legislation does not apply to other consular fees, such as the remission of the two-year residency requirement fee for some exchange visitors. President Biden's foreign policy relies heavily on both work and travel visas, and the US Embassy in Uruguay is aware of the vital contribution that international travel makes to the development of their nation's economy.
