Stanford MBA Graduates' Base Salaries Hit $175K; Up 9% From 2021

Graduating students from the batch 2022 arrived on the Stanford campus during a period of immense uncertainty and began their MBA careers in the midst of a global pandemic. By the time they were finished, the class reported an increment in mean base salary of USD 182K and a median base salary of USD 175K.

Stanford MBA Graduates' Base Salaries Hit $175K; Up 9% From 2021

The mean and median starting salary for Stanford GSB MBA graduates have increased for eight straight years. For the batch 2022, the median salary and the average initial were USD 175,000 and USD 182,272 respectively.

Several B-schools, notably Stanford, indicated that median base wages increased to USD 175,000, an increase of almost 9% over the batch of 2021. Needless to say, this jump of almost 9% does not reflect performance or signing bonuses, which are typical compensation packages for MBA graduates.

The median pay comprises a median base salary of USD 175,000 for 218 graduates who obtained full-time job offers and revealed their pay. Additionally, 65% of those scholars foresee average yearly performance bonuses of USD 45,000, while 47% of them received signing bonuses of USD 30,000 on average.

A total of 462 graduates from the class of 2022 were included in the data, and 309 of them, or 67%, were searching for employment. After three months, 286 more graduates secured job offers, bringing the total to 236 by graduation.

Consulting (15% of the class), Finance (33%), Healthcare (5%), Media or Entertainment (5%), and Technology (30%) were the leading industries for Stanford MBA graduates in 2022. Graduates who pursued employment in finance had the highest median base salaries of USD 200,000; with many choosing to work in the notoriously lucrative fields of venture capital and private equity.

The expected median performance bonus for finance graduates was USD 150,000, while the expected median signing bonus was USD 50,000. As a result, some Stanford MBA graduates made USD 400,000 in their first year after graduation.

Consulting, with median base wages of USD 190,000, was the next-most lucrative sector for Stanford MBA graduates in 2022. Consulting salaries have increased across the board, especially after the top three consulting firms—McKinsey & Co., Bain & Co., and Boston Consulting Group—announced that they would increase base salaries for MBA graduates to at least USD 190,000.

Furthermore, nearly a third of Stanford GSB class of 2022 students who pursued employment did so in the technology sector. With potential bonuses amounting to nearly USD 50,000, these graduates received median base salaries of more than USD 163,000 each.

Stanford GSB MBA Employment Report 2022

A third of the Stanford GSB MBA batch of 2022 joined the finance business, similar to the class of 2021. Private equity and venture capital were pursued by 14% and 12% respectively. Graduates made up 30% of the technology sector, followed by 15% of the consulting sector. The top five industries were capped by 5% each choosing to work in healthcare and media/entertainment.

In 2022, a significant proportion of Stanford MBA graduates decided to launch their own businesses, with a record contribution of women exploring sectors including women's health and venture capital.
