Oxford University has claimed the top spot in the 2022 edition of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for the sixth consecutive year, followed by California Institute of Technology and Harvard University sharing the second spot. The rankings were announced on September 2, 2021, after analysing over 108 million citations across over 14 million research publications and survey responses from around 22,000 scholars worldwide.
The 2022 rankings have also been marked by Chinas two universities making it to the top 20 for the first time, with Tsinghua University and Peking University sharing the 16th position.
Overall, the US continues to be the most-represented country with 183 universities. This year, China has overtaken Canada to have the joint fifth highest number of universities in the top 200.
This year's ranking also features six new countries including Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Fiji, Palestine, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
