New 'Aggregate' University Ranking Places 16 US Institutions in Top 20

A new World University Ranking system, which had been released last week, called the Rankometer by a Singapore-based AppliedHE, has ranked 16 US higher education institutions in the top 20 list.

As per claims, the new ranking system is supposed to compile the most influential university rankings under one transparent parameter. The process is aimed at simplifying the selection process done by students, parents, employers and all other stakeholders involved.

Sources state that the ranking system brings the rankings of what is considered as the most influential ranking systems for Higher Education across the world. Some of these include the World University Rankings by QS, Shanghai Rankings, CSICs Cybermetrics Lab, Leiden Universitys CWTS and Times Higher Education, and put it under one benchmark.

Guided by the Ranking Advisory Board at AppliedHE, which consist of Aigerim Shilibekova at the University of Canada West, Kevin Downing from the University of Hong Kong and Kingsley Bolton at Swedens University of Stockholm, the system had been developed to ensure independence, transparency and scientific rigour.

The CEO and founder of AppliedHE, Mandy Mok, at the launch of the system, highlighted that the Rankometer is designed to eliminate biases and the narrow focuses of the individual ranking systems through the aggregation of the figures.

She added that they aim to offer a simpler and balanced understanding of gauging the quality of a university to the students, parents, employers and other non-ranking experts. This will help them to make certain decisions pertaining to the universities, easily.

First introduced in 2003, University Rankings have now become an important aspect in the decision-making process of students, parents, employers and other stakeholders. Mandy Mok calls them a game-changer.

She stated that the University rankings have facilitated students and parents to decide the university they wish to attend, the employers to choose their future employees and governments to issue visas. Moreover, rankings also aid stakeholders in making decisions regarding collaborative partnerships, research fundings and more.

Mok further paints a picture where University Ranking agencies have become the rule-makers and universities as the rule-takers, She highlighted that design of the University Rankings can highly influence higher education policies as well.

Kevin Downing, the Chair of the Ranking Advisory Board at AppliedHE, stated that the combination of the top five global rankings allows for a more comprehensive and strong analytical system of global rankings, compared to a single ranking system. He added that with the combination of the rankings, they have worked on bringing a more complete personality and measure of the strengths of an institution.

Under its first ranking list, 16 of the top 20 positions have been taken up by US Universities, os which Stanford took the first spot, meanwhile, Harvard and MIT took the 2nd and the 3rd spot respectively. The University of Oxford andthe University of Cambridge subsequently took the 4th and the 5th place, respectively.
