Indian Students Moving Towards Less-Impacted Countries Amid Covid-19

Despite the ongoing restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, study abroad aspirants in India have been optimistic about your plans. Smaller countries like Sweden, New Zealand and Israel, which have been less impacted by the novel Coronavirus, have witnessed a rise in the number of applications from India.

The number of international degree applicants in Sweden has increased by 13%, as reported by the Sweden embassy. The data put forward by the embassy further revealed that the number of Indian students applying for undergraduate courses has increased from 3,526 in 2019 to 6,811 in 2020. Although a minor increase, applications for postgraduate courses have also increased from 2044 in 2019 to 2,111 this year.

New Zealand has also been taking steps to attract more international students and especially Indians. It has, for that matter, introduced a number of scholarships and allowed 250 international PhD and postgraduate students to enter the country and join the physical campuses.

The government of New Zealand has also launched a COVID-19 short-term visitor visa for temporary migrants/ students whose visas are expiring soon but are unable to leave due to travel restrictions.

Similar to Sweden, Israeli universities have also seen a surge in the number of international applicants. Efforts including innovation, entrepreneurship and digital learning have contributed to this growth, as stated by the Chair of Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Council for Higher Education Prof Yaffa Zilbershats.

Israel has also introduced high tech visas for international students who manage to complete a full academic degree in a higher education institution in the country in areas including computers, information systems, electrical engineering, electronics and computer science.

New Zealand had earlier this year set up a centre at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This and the New Education Policy 2020, letting foreign institutes establish campuses in India, would further strengthen the education ties between India and New Zeland.

Talking of NEP 2020, Israels Zilbershats said that it is an interesting development for education in both India and across the world.
