With over one million job vacancies in Canada and the low unemployment rate, the possibility of immigrants filling the job positions has increased. The country intends to invite over 4,30,000 permanent residents in 2022 which is the highest ever target. The same will continue to burgeon to over 4,50,000 in 2024.

In July 2022, a report stated that the job vacancies have reached a record high in some of the states in Canada. In Ontario and Alberta, the average number of unemployed people, i.e. 1.1 for each job vacancy in the month of April, has reduced from 1.2 in March and 2.4 from the previous year. Earlier, in Newfoundland and Labrador, there were four unemployed people for each vacant job position.

The sectors in which there are maximum job vacancies are numerous. In the construction sector, the job vacancies reached a new record of 89,900 in April. This rise is from 5.4% in March and 45% in April 2021.
Technical, professional and scientific services, real estate, finance and insurance, transportation and warehousing and entertainment and recreation are looking at record-high job vacancies.
Employment in educational services increased by 9,700 in April from March and has also surpassed the February 2020 pre-pandemic level.
In addition, there has been a 10% increase in employment in accommodation and food services since February.

Canada’s labour market has shrunk significantly with people aged 55 years and above retiring and the country has more than 1 million job vacancies. The fertility rate has also reduced in the country to 1.4 children per woman.
