India Continues to be the Leading Source of Global Talent in Canada

Canada has been one of the top destinations for Indians, especially those looking to study or find job opportunities abroad. And this demand by Indians can be seen in a recent report published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

According to the report published by IRCC, Indians made up nearly one-third of the 405,303 new permanent residents being issued in the past year. It was also reported that 50% of the 450,000 international students that travelled to Canada were Indians.

CICNews reported that around 10,000 Indians travelled to the country under the Temporary Foreign Worker Programme along with the 130,000 who received their work permits under the International Mobility Programme.

Canada, over the past few years, has been working towards filling its labour shortages by inviting more and more skilled migrant workers.

In the recent immigration levels plan targets set by the Canadian government, the nation is expecting to welcome over 1 million new permanent residents between 2022-24. The Immigration Levels Plan highlights an annual intake target of 430,000 newcomers. Canada offers multiple pathways for aspiring migrant workers who wish to receive their PR in Canada.

However, currently, Canada is offering a PR pathway programme through the Express Entry programme, which is an online system created to manage applications through three programmes, i.e., the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, the Federal Skilled Trades Programme and the Canadian Experience Class.

Alongside the Express Entry programme, Canada also allows participating provinces to host Provincial Nominee Programme to select a specified number of economic immigrants every year, nominating them for PR. Such PNP programmes have been designed to meet the labour market as well as the economic demands of the region.

Further, with Canada’s Post Graduate Work Permit, international students can now stay in the country after graduating from Canadian universities and apply for jobs and subsequently a PR as well.
