What does NYU Look for in Students?
New York University highly esteems class diversity. The class of 2025 is the school’s most diverse class to date. The underrepresented students form 29% of the class, 20% of the students are first-generation university students and 19% of the students are international students.
NYU also sends several students to study abroad which means that the university wishes them to expose to various cultures and ways of life. The university has satellite campuses in 14 countries and plans to provide opportunities to broaden the horizons of students.
Besides class diversity, NYU equally values strong academic performance and hard work. The acceptance rates are exceptionally low while the average test scores required to get admission are record-high. The students must be exceptionally well qualified.
NYU offers early decisions to students who are sure of making the university their first choice. Early decision offers are binding on students and they cannot apply for regular decisions if they do not take admission to New York University.
New York University Acceptance Rate 2022
NYU's acceptance rate is in tandem with the other prestigious US colleges and universities. Similar to them, the university has a very low acceptance rate. Among all the international prestigious universities, Ivy League schools are the most infamous for their very low acceptance rates. However, New York University is not far behind. Although not a part of the Ivy League, it matches their selectiveness with an acceptance rate ranging from 12% to 18%.
In the Spring intake of 2022, the university made headlines to record the lowest-ever intake acceptance rate for the school. While the overall rate was recorded at 12.2%, three faculty colleges recorded single-digit acceptance rates. Stern School of Business and College of Arts and Science each recorded a seven per cent acceptance rate and Rosy Meyers College of Nursing recorded a mere three per cent acceptance rate.
While these percentages present the school as highly selective, the overall figures tell otherwise. Since 2020, the number of admission offers issued by NYU has increased, again at a record rate. The total number was 105,000 in the Spring 2022 intake, which is five per cent higher than the preceding intake offers. This discrepancy can be attributed to the increased number of applications received by the school.
New York University also deserves to be applauded for its dedication to diversity and inclusion. The class of 2026 will represent 107 countries and about 40% of the class will consist of people of colour. Approximately, 22% of the class is comprised of international students.
Even as NYU keeps showcasing selectiveness in its acceptance rate its graduation rate of 78% is remarkable in sight of its competitive and strenuous courses. This clearly indicates the benefits you could reap by being an NYU graduate.

What Are New York University Admission Requirements?
NYU's admission process is among the most competitive admission process. While there is no cap on the number of seats available or the number of offers to be issued, the schools are highly selective of who can pursue education on their campus. They have no problem lowering their acceptance rates, as long as only worthy applicants make it to NYU's city-wide campus.
Here is what the university expects from you in your application.
Academic Requirements
Past academic records are the foundation of your admission decision. Hence, all the documents, test scores, and personal endeavours, which have resulted in you gaining your knowledge till the application needs to be submitted. While some are a part of your education, others are proof of your claimed skills and aptitude.
-
GPA and Past Academic Performance: Self Reported Academic Report (SRAR) is a comprehensive report showcasing your overall academic performance in previous academic years. Your report must summarise all your GPAs and while your last GPA must conform to the course eligibility requirement, not all your GPAs have to. The GPA should be at least 3.0.
-
Standardised Test Scores: While minimum requirements are mentioned, your scores must exceed them by at least seven to nine points to make it into the course. The median SAT score for the 2026 class at NYU is 1550, but the minimum score requirement ranges from 1530-1537. The GMAT score requirement for MBA admissions is above 660.
-
English Proficiency Test Scores: NYU expects international applicants to submit proof of their fluency in the English language. Your test scores must be equivalent to 7.0 IELTS bands or above.
-
Additional Relevant Achievements: If you have gained any certificate, diploma, or short-term degree in course-relevant subjects, then you must ensure to mention the same in your application. They show NYU your dedication to your education.
-
Internships and Field Experience: If you have worked or observed as an intern, the actual work or application of course-related concepts, then you must use the same in your application to NYU.
Audition and Portfolio
There are certain courses offered by NYU which require you to showcase your work and ideas. This helps the respective faculty school to understand your way of thinking, your contribution to the field, and further potential. You need to record your own video interview and make a portfolio of your work to apply for these courses.
While the requirement shall be specifically mentioned if you wish you could use portfolios and video interviews in your application even if your course does not require it. It is a great way, especially if you consider yourself a better spokesperson, to appeal to your chosen course faculty.
Your portfolio need not be overly creative, but it should be presentable and clear. Moreover, your work should be your own. In the case of the video interview, your appearance must be formal and clean and ensure that the recording is also clear, both in speech and pixels.
Application Essays and SOP
Your SOPs and essays are extremely important when applying for NYU admissions. They cannot simply have all the information, you also need to make them interesting, readable, and appealing.
Your application essays and SOPs must speak your ideas and opinions in a positive light. It is your thinking and working style that NYU seeks to assess.
LORs
While there are various kinds of authoritative positions and persons which could be sought for LORs, you need to focus on those which are most relevant to your chosen course and the education system. The recommendations of your teachers, supervisors, principals and counsellors are preferred by NYU. Hence, you must focus on getting relevant LORs rather than the number of LORs.
In numbers, you only need to meet eligibility requirements, and all extra references shall be considered on basis of applicability and relevance.
Extracurricular Activities
NYU is among the universities which are known to prefer students who are not only academically inclined but also actively involved in extracurricular activities as well. While the school does not any preference, if your activities are relevant to your course of study then you manage a competitive edge over other applicants.
For instance, as a Political Sciences student being involved in debates, discussions, and social projects work in your favour.
Social and Leadership Acumen
NYU expects its students to have a streak of leadership and humanity. Though you need not command any powerful position or build an organisation, you do need to take up personal projects where you work like a leader. The most important thing sought by NYU is that students must have the courage to think about how to better the current situation and take steps in the same direction. As far as you manage to impress this, however small the change driven by you, you shall be noticed.
Holistic Potential
It must be plainly clear to you by now. NYU does not seek only academic excellence but holistic excellence. This means that the university understands the importance of soft skills like an ethical compass, time management, leadership, social responsibility, humanity, etc. The school dedicates itself to ensure students enrolled are not only employable but better citizens of society. Hence, you must also depict yourself as an individual with the potential for holistic development.
