History, Affiliations and Rankings

The University of Illinois, Chicago was founded in 1982 by the combination of the Medical Center campus and the Chicago Circle campus. Popularly known as UIC, the public research university has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and is affiliated to the Universities Research Association and Great Cities Universities. It has a total of 16 colleges, set up to provide the highest levels of academic excellence. According to the US News and World Reports Ranking of 2021, UIC is ranked 112th among the best national universities and 52nd among the best national public universities. In the 2018 Washington Monthly ranking of universities in the country, the university was ranked 26th among top national universiteis in the US.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The campus of UIC is spread over an area of 244 acres. The East Campus is on the Near West Side, right on the corner of Halsted and Harrison streets. In the West, students have access to the Illinois Medical District, the Library of the Health Sciences, housing and the Student Center West. UIC has over 33,000 students, 6 regional campuses for medicine and nursing and around 3,000 faculty members. The university offers 86 Bachelors, 111 Masters, 66 Doctoral and 66 certificate programs in the fields of sciences, technology, arts, humanities, business, public, urban planning and public administration and healthcare.

UIC has seven Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change that further make the university an inclusive place for its students. The Office of Career Services at the university plays an active role in conducting virtual mock interviews and training students to create professional resumes. UICs colleges also host career fairs, workshops and have expert guides who connect students with jobs and internships.

University of Illinois, Chicago, USA Scholarship

Laurette Kirstein Scholarship for UIC International Students

This scholarship is awarded to UIC students who succeed in displaying academic excellence and meet the following requirements: 

  • Enrolled in a full-time program at UIC either at undergraduate or graduate level.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must have completed at least one semester of coursework at UIC at the time of application.

Winners receive a $5,000 (pre-tax) award to cover tuition, books, and living expenses in the US. For the 2021-22 academic year, a total of six such awards will be offered to eligible international students.

The last date to apply for Laurette Kirstein Scholarship was April 2, 2021 by midnight.

Additional Scholarships at UIC

The UIC Office of External Fellowships (OEF) also offers and assists current UIC students in looking and applying for external scholarship awards such as the following: 

Chicago Consular Corps Scholarship: The opportunity is only open to UIC undergraduate and graduate students. It includes a total of nine scholarships for current UIC international students.

AESF Scholarship: For undergraduate and graduate students from the US and outside pursuing mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, chemical engineering, material science or engineering; environmental engineering or chemistry.

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship: This scholarship is for international students to pursue graduate study in the United States. 

Institute for Humane Studies Fellowships: Available for undergraduate or graduate study up to $12,000 for UIC students wishing to explore the practices, principles, and institutions required for a free society.

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund: The fund is for students from developing countries who are currently studying in the US. It grants an annual award worth $12,000 to students who focus on improving the lives of women and children in a developing country.
