On August 4, 2022, the UK government scrapped the original requirement for all international students to undergo police verification, effective immediately.

UK Scraps Compulsory Police Verification for International Students

The UK Home Office has withdrawn the requirement for international students to undergo compulsory police verification. The rule also applies to students currently in the UK who have already submitted their details.

International students in the UK were earlier required to register their contact and personal details with the local police. This was compulsory for all students who had a UK student visa which prolonged their stay in the UK to six months or more.

The required contact and personal details included the place of study, course, home country, permanent address in the home country, residence in the UK, its address, contact number, and university of enrollment, among any other information.

The rule was announced on August 4, 2022, and has been applicable with immediate effect, with universal applicability. This means that any student who has recently submitted an application for verification, they are no longer obliged to complete the verification.

Moreover, students who are under the condition to register themselves for police verification have also been relieved. Earlier, their noncompliance would have resulted in deportation to their home country.

UUK as well as other sectors had been requesting for the Police Verification Scheme to be removed for some time now.

Harry Anderson, Universities UK's Policy Manager, stated that many universities and international students would be content with the decision. The compulsory verification often served as an additional duty and unavoidable expense for international students. In addition, Students had to pay a certain fee to register and complete the police verification process.

Anderson highlighted that the required information was already recorded during the student visa application process, which makes an additional step unnecessary.

Membership Director at English UK, Huan Japes, added that anything that makes studying in the UK simpler is a welcome move. The same is expected to improve the overall student experience.
