The PTE Academic can now be used for the non-Student Direct Stream (SDS), which is the regular study permit processing programme for students who want to study at a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. About 90% of public universities in Canada now accept the test.
Administered by Pearson, PTE Academic has also been recognised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as a Secure English Language Test (SELT) that can be used by international students who cannot apply for the expedited SDS.
For the non-SDS stream, scores of only IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are accepted and on the other hand, the SDS stream accepts both IELTS General and IELTS Academic.

Managing director for Pearson Canada Marlene Olsavsky said that Indian students wishing to study in Canada can take the test now that it has been made mandatory for regular study permit applications.
In 2020, 46 more Canadian organisations have recognised PTE Academic, bringing the total number of education providers accepting the test to 194.
Olsavsky further mentioned that over 30 test centres in India are open for the conduct of the test, including cities of Punjab, Hyderabad and Gujarat.

PTE Academic also allows students to send scores to an unlimited number of institutions, unlike other English language proficiency tests, she explained.
The testing provider has also announced the launch of SELTs in Nigeria for those who want to work, study or live in the UK.
SVP for English Assessment, Freya Thomas Monk said that PTE Academic will let Nigerians explore more opportunities in the UK.
