The CBSE has put forward proposals to delay Class 12 board exams, to which school principals have responded that the new proposals will hamper study abroad plans and affect undergraduate admissions schedule across the world.

Delay in CBSE Class 12 Board Exams May Disrupt Students' Study Abroad Plans

Amid proposals by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to conduct Class 12 board exams in July-August 2021, school principals are of the view that it would disrupt the plans of students looking forward to studying abroad and overall affect the college admission schedule.

In a meeting, the CBSE proposed to conduct Class 12 boards between July 15 and August 26 and declare the results in September 2021. It also proposed two options for the same: either holding regular exams for only the 19 major subjects at designated centres or conducting exams of shorter duration at the students school.

In the first option, assessment for minor subjects may be based on a students performance in major subjects. The same can be done within three months provided that amount of time is available to the board. The official said that the exams could be held in August and the whole process may go on till the end of September.

In case the second option is accepted, the exams may be conducted twice depending on the situation. If a candidate is not able to sit the exam due to a Covid-related reason, they may be given another chance to appear for the exam. The duration of the exams will be cut down to 90 minutes from 3 hours. Questions will be objective or very short answer-type and the exam will be conducted in the school at which the candidate is enrolled. Every student will have to appear in one language and 3 elective subjects. The first phase may be conducted between July 15 and August 1, 2021, and the second phase between August 8 and August 26, 2021. The exam may also be conducted on Sundays.

Director at MRG School, Rohini, Rajat Goel, said that the new proposal may have a negative impact on students higher education timeline as there would be enough gap between board exams and university entrance exams.

Talking about those hoping to study abroad, a principal of a top Gurgaon school said that the academic schedule in the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand usually starts in September. So, students might not be able to apply to foreign universities for the September 2021 intake. Although board scores have very little impact on foreign admissions, passing Class 12 is mandatory.

Principal, Modern School, Shalimar Bagh, Alka Kapur, said that the new proposal was correct and universities abroad will offer flexibility to students considering the current situation across India. It seems fair since sending students to exam centres now will not be safe.
