PGWPs are popular because they allow international graduates to increase their points while applying for permanent residency (PR) in Canada. In 2022, approximately 98,000 PGWP holders became permanent residents, which is nearly 82% of all temporary residents that attained a PR in Canada.

Canada: PGWP Holders Can Now Apply for a New Open Work Permit

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has stated that qualifying current and previous Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) holders may be able to receive an 18-month Open Work Permit beginning April 6, 2023. This special public policy intends to support Canadian employers in addressing past labour shortages while also giving PGWP holders extra time to move to permanent residence status in Canada.

How Will This Benefit PGWP Holders in Canada?

The new Open Work Permit extension in Canada allows eligible individuals to work in any occupation and for any organization in Canada for up to 18 months. Even if an applicant is ineligible to opt-in for this work permit, they can still apply for a new work visa. Eligible candidates can choose a streamlined approach to renew their work permits, apply to renew their work permits, or restore their status and obtain a new work permit.

Who Can Apply for a New Open Work Permit in Canada?

Individuals must reside in Canada and log into their IRCC Secure Account to ensure that their mailing address is up to date, confirm that their passport information is up to date and has an expiration date of June 2025 or later, and opt-in for an additional 18 months to be eligible for the simplified process of the new open work permit.

If they do not already have an account, they must sign up for an IRCC Secure Account and attach their most recent PGWP application to it before May 20, 2023.

This new extension of the Open Work Permit is a big development for eligible PGWP holders who were previously having non-renewable work permits in Canada. This new extension will give qualified or eligible individuals more time to gather Canadian work experience, potentially leading to an easier transition to PR in Canada. Additionally, several of Canada's economic class immigration programmes favour individuals with Canadian work experience because it benefits labour market integration after permanent residence.

PGWPs allow qualifying international graduates to work in Canada for up to 3 years after completing their studies, depending on the length of the international graduate's programme. PGWPs are popular because they allow international graduates to improve their chances of getting Canadian PR. Having said that, approximately 98,000 PGWP holders became permanent residents in Canada, which include 82% of all temporary residents who have earned a PR status.
