The University of Pittsburgh was founded by Hugh Henry in 1787 as Pittsburgh Academy. Till the year 1966, it was a private institution and then it became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education. The University of Pittsburgh is a member of the Association of American Universities. National Institutes of Health majorly funds this University for research purposes also university is 3rd largest recipient of federally sponsored health research funding among U.S universities. According to the US News & World Report of 2020, Pitts was ranked tied for 18th among public universities and tied for 57th among National Universities.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

In its urban Pittsburgh campus, the University has 17 undergraduate, graduate school, and colleges. University's main campus has an area of 132 acres and is famous for its 42 stories Gothic revival centerpiece, the Cathedral of Learning. The main campus is within walking distance in the neighborhood of Oakland. With courses in Arts Science and Humanities, University is committed to Liberal Art Education. The most sought after courses are Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services; Engineering; Health Professions and Related Programs; Social Sciences; and Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Pitts students and faculty have won four Rhodes Scholarships from 2006. In 2007, three national military academies, and only public University to win both Rhodes and Marshall Scholars. Most of the Fulbright scholars are produced at the University of Pittsburgh. Alumni of Pitts have won the Nobel Peace Prize (Wangari Maathai, in 2004), Nobel Prize (Paul Lauterbur, for his work in magnetic resonance imaging). Notable alumni include Dan Marino, Gene Kelly, Mike Ditka, Michael Chabon, and many more.

Representation of races in Pitts is at par with the national average, it has nearly 73% white students and 10% from Asian countries, other permanently enrolled students are Latino or African Americans. The gender ratio is excellent with nearly 52% female students. Pitts campus has International Students from more than 49 countries, and its student body has about 11%, international students. Top recruiters include Walmart, Walgreens, CVS Health, CVS Pharmacy, Xerox, PwC, Ernst and Young to name a few.
