Despite the delay in the announcement of NEET 2021 results and travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students from Tamil Nadu are still flying out to study medicine.
This year, a total of 1.08 lakh students appeared for NEET from Tamil Nadu, of which 8,992 qualified.
Before the pandemic hit, educational consultants say that Tamil Nadu used to see around 5,000 students every year willing to study medicine abroad.

Given that the NEET 2021 cutoff for medical admissions is expected to remain more or less the same as last year, many students have chosen to study MBBS in Russia, Ukraine, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal and Georgia.
Over the years, study destinations for medicine like China and Russia have seen a large number of students from the state. However, China is still yet to begin admitting foreign students and Russia has already closed admissions.
Many popular universities in Russia have closed admissions due to the delay in releasing NEET 2021 results.

Despite that, an increase in interest among Tamil Nadu students to study medicine abroad has been witnessed.
Students are also not opting for universities offering courses in online mode and many have taken up different career options amid the pandemic.
