Survey Reveals Increase in Number of Indian Students in Germany in Winter 2021

Recent data shows that the number of international students enrolled at German universities has increased again in the current winter semester. This comes after a drop in the numbers registered in the summer of 2021 after lockdowns were imposed in many countries including India.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) recently released a survey, a snapshot of which revealed that at least 330,000 international students are currently studying in Germany.

According to DAAD projections, the number of international first-semester students, which stands at at least 72,000, has also increased despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The survey. based on around 160 universities from all around Germany, the number of international students in Germany will continue to increase in the winter semester of this academic year (2021-22).

DAAD President Dr Joybroto Mukherjee said that the survey of the participating universities would let them look forward to the new year with hope. In addition, the number of first-year international students has also increased after significant declines in the last winter semester.

An increase of around 13% or above is much better than expected in the summer, further indicating that Germany continues to attract a huge number of students from abroad. This also shows the commitment of the member universities and the DAAD in supporting international students during the pandemic, added Dr Mukherjee.

The survey also shows that the surveyed higher educational institutions (HEIs) reported a rise in newly enrolled students from India along with other countries such as Iran, Italy, Turkey and France. However, countries such as Syria, China and Cameroon reported a lower number of newly enrolled students sent to Germany.

Additionally, nearly 29% of the HEIs surveyed reported around a 10% increase in the number of new students enrolments from India.

For comparison, the total new intenational student enrolment in 2020-21 was 64,000 in the winter admission intake, lower than the 2021-22 winter admission intake in Germany which was between 72,000 to 80,000. As per media reports, several reasons can be attributed to the rise in applications, which included, a rapid recovering / rise in numbers of exchange (non-degree) and guest students, as well as a significant rise in international degree-seeking student enrolment in German universities and higher education institutions.

Reports revealed that DAAD survey around 270 higher education institutions, receiving around 158 reponses. Reports also highlighted that nearly 65% of all international students have been enrolled in the surveyed institutions.

Among them, 31% of the institutions saw a 5% or higher international student enrolment, while 40% of the institutions saw stable numbers. Additionally, the survey also highlighted a clear return of international students to German university campuses, despite the pandemic and country-wise travel restrictions. Currently, at nearly 80% of the surveyed institutions, students are pursuing their courses in hybrid models, where classes are conducted in a balanced mixture of in-person and distance/online learning.
