A virtual meeting was organised by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) that was attended by representatives of over 1000 universities inGermanyto discuss the challenges faced by them post COVID-19 crisis. Most universities have shown their concerns about the fall in the number of international students due to the closure of campuses and travel restrictions.
Joybrato Mukherjee, the President of DAAD said that several universities are worried about international students due to the financial and psychological situation faced by students. They emphasized the lack of social contacts as one of the major reasons for students suffering and that the university counselling services should be increased to assist and motivate students as most classes in upcoming semesters are also scheduled to be conducted remotely.

After hearing the plight of German universities, Mukherjee stressed the importance of international students in Germany for the education sector and industry and urged the education politicians to focus their efforts on retaining international students. He further added that the state governments should implement psychosocial services for international students through personal contacts and additional learning facilities.
While the situation is tough for universities as well as students, many German universities have come up to support international students in the best possible ways. Apart from general support, the universities have offered a number of services to help international students. Many of the universities modified their application and selection process for international students. Most of the deadline dates were extended and also reschedules their academic programmes. Financial support has also been raised to help students in emergency need.
