More Universities in Canada Allowed to Welcome Overseas Students

Latest Update (January 25, 2021):A total of 490 DLIs in Ontario have had their Covid-19 readiness plans approved.

More Canadian universities have been added to the list of approved Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) that are allowed to welcome international students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Travel restrictions in Canada had first included new students from foreign countries. International students with a study permit or approval granted on or before March 18 were the only ones allowed to enter Canada. Recently, the country has started to ease these travel restrictions to attract more international students wishing to pursue higher education in Canada.

Students enrolled in these approved DLIswill be exempted from travel restrictions in Canadathat were imposed in view of the pandemic. They will most likely be allowed to enter by a border official upon arrival.

All international students entering Canada will be required to quarantine themselves for 14 days uponarrival. Failure to abide by the same may lead to fines.

Also, individuals travelling to Canada, particularly by air will have to install the ArriveCAN app, on which you must submit your contact and travel information along with your quarantine plan and daily Covid-19 system self-assessment.

According to a study done by CourseCompare, a platform that connects students to training programmes and courses found that many Canadian universities including in Ontario and British Columbia have witnessed a drop in enrollment by international students.

However, this is not the case with all universities in Canada. For instance, UBC Okanagan saw a 9% increase in international students enrolling in undergraduate programmes.

One possible reason for the same could be that many Canadian universities and colleges are mulling over extending online teaching until the next semester. International students, who pay higher fees than domestic students, may be hesitant to enrol until students are allowed to return to campus.

Many international students are enrolled in practical hand-on programmes such as nursing, acting and lab-dependent programmes such as film production and electrical engineering. With them demanding courses delivered majorly on campus, they have been the most negatively impacted by the pandemic.

As far as domestic students are concerned, there has been a rise in enrollment in universities and colleges in Quebec, Atlantic Canada, B.C. and Ontario.
