A sigh of relief for Ukraine-returned students nearly a year later, the Centre has announced permission for the students to clear the MBBS final exams. As per reports, the Centre informed the Supreme Court, that the students will be given one chance at clearing both Part 1 and 2 of the final MBBS exams, without having to enrol in any of the existing medical colleges.
Nearly 18,000 students returned to India last year, several students have been working towards finishing their medical degrees since their return. The ability to clear the two exams will help the students complete the necessary 2-year internship. As per regulations, the first year of the internship will be unpaid with the second being paid, as decided by NMC.

The Centre had established a committee to address the concerns raised by the students with regard to their medical futures. The committee was responsible for coming up with the decision, emphasising it as a one-time. In addition to this, the committee also stated that the decision will not become a basis for other similar decisions that may arise in the future. Concluding the statement, the committee highlighted the decision being applicable to present matters alone.
With the implementation of the move, the Centre is expecting to provide much-needed relief and solutions to students who have been struggling to complete their foreign degrees from India for the past year.
Towards the latter half of the previous year, nearly 1,500 Indian students who had returned from Ukraine amidst the war returned to Ukraine after seeing no respite to their academic woes. The Centre had previously denied offering any provision to the Ukraine-returned medical students with no solution in sight.

However, to accommodate the students, several universities and state governments had urged the centre to make certain accommodations. In fact, 8 universities in Karnataka offered help to the Ukraine-returned Indian students while state governments urged the Centre to give some relief to the students.
