Following an announcement from the Centre to the court, the foreign minister of Ukraine also announced that the Indian medical students who returned from Ukraine earlier last year can take the key examination from India. The First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova also highlighted the same during her three-day visit to New Delhi.
In its statement, the Ministry of External Affairs, issued a statement as Dzhaparova was completing her visit to New Delhi, and announced that the foreign medical students, enrolled in medical schools in Ukraine were permitted to take the Unified State Qualification Exam in the country of their domicile.

With 19,000 Indian students having returned from Ukraine after the invasion of Russia in February 2022, the hopes and dreams of many lay uncertain as no provisions were made with respect to their academic and professional future in medicine. In fact, despite the Centre’s advisory, nearly 2,000 Indian students returned to Ukraine, residing mostly in the western part of the country.
It was the initiative of the Ukrainian authorities that allows students still residing in India to join online classes and have the option to attempt the Unified State Qualification Exam in India. The foreign minister met with Sanjay Verma, the Secretary (West) in the MEA and the Minister of State for External Affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi. It was during this visit that they help bilateral talks as well.

The MEA further spoke about Ukraine’s desire to build a “stronger and closer relationship with India”, the MEA stated, adding that the visit would facilitate such cooperation between the two countries as well.
After months of uncertainty, the announcement by both the centre and the Ukrainian government, the Ukraine-returned Indian medical students will be able to build their medical future once again. As stated above, the Centre had recently announced that the Ukraine-returned students will be able to attempt Part 1 and Part 2 of the final MBBS exams, without having to enrol in any Indian medical colleges.
