Government Scholarships for International Students in Germany

There are several Government Scholarships for international students in Germany that all international students can find themselves eligible for. Here are a few Government Scholarships available in Germany, that you can apply for:

DAAD Scholarships: A joint organisation comprising Germany’s Higher Education Institutions, DAAD or the German Academic Exchange Service offers numerous scholarship opportunities to international students from across the word. Students will be able to choose scholarships along with search for the right courses and programmes to pursue in Germany.

Erasmus+ Scholarships: Offered by the European Commission for international students to study in any of the European States. The scholarship is aimed at funding the living costs of students and doctoral candidates while they complete their programme in their destination of study.

Along with the scholarship opportunities from the government, international students can also apply for scholarships that are provided by private organisations or through public-private partnerships as well. Some of these scholarships include:

Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships: These scholarships are offered to international students pursuing higher education at all levels, i.e. Undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate offered by one of the accredited institutions in Germany.

Humboldt Research Fellowships for Postdoctoral Researchers: These are scholarships applicable for postdoctoral scholars or scientists from any nationality and subject.

Kurt Hansen Science Scholarships: These scholarships are applicable to those students who are training to become educators in the discipline of science. The scholarship is funded by the Bayer Foundation.

Deutschland Stipendium: A monthly income of €300 will be offered to students as a Merit-based scholarship. These are applicable to all students who are highly talented and are enrolled to one of the German Higher Institutions. To be eligible, nationality and monthly income will not be considered.

Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship: Students studying or completing their doctorate at a University of Applied Sciences which is either a State-run or a State-recognised university. The scholarship is aimed at providing academic financial assistance in a bid to facilitate democracy. Students enrolled in social sciences, politics or humanities may find this scholarship attractive. To be eligible, candidates must display exceptional proficiency in the German language and is limited to 40 people from across the globe.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship: Another scholarship for students interested in politics is the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship. The scholarship is applicable for academically above-average students who have completed their undergraduate studies. So therefore, any foreign national planning to study postgraduate, doctoral or a research programme in Germany can apply for the scholarship, however, PhD applicants will be given priority.

KAAD Scholarships for Developing Countries: Offered by KAAD, these are scholarship opportunities for international students who belong to developing countries (in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America). To be eligible for these scholarships, one must be studying a master’s or doctoral program at a university in Germany. They must possess German-language skills and be of Catholic-Christian denomination.

University-specific Scholarships for International Students in Germany

Given below are some popular universities in Germany that offer scholarships to international students:

Frankfurt School of Finance and Management Doctoral Tuition Waivers: Open to doctoral students at Frankfurt, these scholarships offer tuition fee waivers every academic year. The student must be studying an English language program in the fields of finance, mathematics, business administration or accounting.

FRIAS Cofund Fellowship Programme for International Researchers: These are for students from outside Germany who are studying a research-level program at Universität Freiburg.

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences Masters Scholarships: Offered by Hamburg University, these scholarships are open to all international students enrolled in a master’s degree. The degree, however, should be in any subject except design, public health and public management.

Universität Hamburg Merit Scholarships: These scholarships for all outstanding international students enrolled at the university in a program of any level and subject for at least two semesters. Applicants are also considered based on their financial need and desire to participate in the internationalisation of the university.

Heidelberg University Scholarships: Heidelberg University offers a number of scholarships such as the Amirana Scholarships for students from developing countries. The students must enroll in a program in the field of medicine or dentistry.HHL International MSc Scholarship for Effective and Responsible Leadership: The scholarship is available for students who wish to study management at postgraduate or doctoral level at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management.

Humboldt University International Research Fellowships: International students pursuing research at Humboldt University can apply for research fellowship opportunities. The research should be in the fields of law, history, sociology, anthropology, geography, political science, economics or area studies.

International Doctoral Positions at Graduate School of East and Southeast European Studies: These scholarships are open to students studying at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich or Universität Regensburg as a research fellow at the Graduate School of East and Southeast European Studies.

Kofi Annan MBA Scholarships for Developing Country Students: Offered by the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin, the scholarship opportunity is for five international students from developing countries who are enrolled in a full-time program at the university. Other scholarships offered by the school includes ESMT Women's Academic Scholarship for female candidates.

Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids: Max Planck Institute in Germany offers scholarships to international students who wish to study solid state chemistry at the institute.

Ulm University Scholarships for International Students: Available for international students who are in need of financial assistance, the scholarship is offered by Ulm University. Only students who are nearing graduation can apply and funding will be offered for one semester only.

Indian Government Scholarship to Study in Germany

Seeing the vast number of Indian students aspiring to study at universities abroad, the Indian government has created a number of financial aid and scholarships. The Central and state governments provide individual scholarships that aspirants can qualify for, to reduce their financial commitment to study at some of the best universities abroad. National Overseas Scholarship

Offered by the Central Government, the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) is designed to help students from low-income families, belonging to the Landless Agricultural Labourers, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Traditional Artisans. • Have obtained 60% marks or an equivalent grade in the qualifying exam. The qualifying exam for a Master’s degree would be the Bachelor's Degree and for a PhD, the qualifying exam would be the Master’s Degree.

• Candidates should also not exceed the maximum age limit which has been set at 35 as of 1st April of the year of application.

• To financially qualify for the scholarship, the combined family income from all sources should not exceed INR 8 lakhs per annum, in the preceding year.

AP Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi Scholarship

The AP Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi Scholarship is offered by the government of Andhra Pradesh to low-income students belonging to SC, ST, BC, EBC and DW categories. The scholarship is designed to facilitate the dreams of aspirants wishing to study at reputable universities abroad, by offering scholarship awards worth INR 10 to 15 lakhs as a grant.

The eligibility criteria for the AP Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi Scholarship have been outlined here:

• Candidates interested in pursuing courses in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Humanities, Pure Sciences and Social Sciences will be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

• Candidates belonging to the SC, ST, BC, EBC and DW categories are eligible for the scholarship.

• To financially qualify, the combined family income from all sources should not exceed more than 2 lakhs.

TS Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi Scholarship

Offered on similar lines as the AP Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi, the TS Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi Scholarship is offered by the government of Telangana State to low-income students belonging to SC/ST and other minority categories. The scholarship is designed to help students pursue higher education at their dream institutions abroad.

Here are the eligibility criteria for TS Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi Scholarship:

• Candidates who possess a valid degree in the fields of Engineering Management, Agriculture Sciences, Social Sciences, Pure Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Humanities, with a minimum of 60% in the qualifying exams can apply for the scholarship.

• They should not exceed 35 years of age as of July 1 of the year of application.

• The combined family income from all sources should be less than INR 5 lakhs per annum.
