The IELTS exam is conducted at 77 official test centres that are present all over India. Specific test centres are allotted for IELTS computer-based tests and IELTS paper-based tests in India. Accommodations for Differently Abled Exam Takers at IELTS Centre

The IELTS testing authority and IELTS centres in India ensure special measures to support differently-abled exam takers. The services are available for test takers with learning disabilities, hearing disabilities, vision disabilities, any other medical condition, and infant feeding.

The following facilities are available to accommodate differently abled exam takers:

  • Extra time for medical conditions or infant feeding,

  • Braille papers,

  • Special listening CD with necessary stops and pauses,

  • A lip-reading version of the Listening test,

  • Enlarged print or Speaking task cards in Braille.

Candidates who wish to avail of any of the IELTS special accommodation services can request the same with their test centre.

Candidates need to ensure that they give their test centre at least six weeks' notice. On receiving the request, the test centre will take the following steps:

  • Check the application deadline, and if they provide the test centre with at least six weeks’ time to make appropriate arrangements.

  • On positive confirmation, they will ask for full details of the difficulty faced by the candidate.

  • They will make appropriate arrangements according to the details available to them.

In case the test centre is incapable of accommodating a differently abled candidate, they will try to make arrangements at a test centre that can arrange accordingly.

Note: IELTS centre may ask the candidate to present a medical certificate in support of their disability.

Facilities Available for Physically Challenged People at IELTS Centre

The officials at IELTS centres across India are available to help candidates with visual, hearing, speaking or listening impediments. In case a candidate needs help at the test centre, they must inform the authorities at least six months before taking the test. Those who need a modified version of the IELTS exam must give notice to the test centre at least three months before taking the test.

Special arrangements such as extra time to attempt the questions are also available for candidates who present relevant medical documents. The English language abilities of the candidate will be analysed objectively regardless of any disabilities or special arrangements asked for by the candidate.

Can I Change the IELTS Centre?

The request for a change of test centre for the IELTS test can be made by sending an email to ielts.india@idp.com. In case, the request is accepted, the authorities will send an acknowledgement mail to the candidate in a day or two confirming the changed venue, IELTS exam dates, and time. However, the request must be made at least five weeks before taking the test.

What to Bring to an IELTS Test Centre?

Along with identification documents, there are certain other important things that all IELTS test-takers must or must not bring to their designated IELTS centre:

  • All candidates must bring their ID, which they used for registering for the IELTS test. The staff at the test centre will check the identification document before letting them enter to take the test.

  • For the paper-based test, candidates are allowed to bring pens, pencils, and erasers. However, for the computer-delivered test, paper and pencils are provided for all by the IELTS centres, and they must not bring these stationaries with them.

  • It is okay to bring a mobile phone, but it should be switched off and placed with other personal belongings in a special storage area arranged at the test centre.

  • Students are advised not to bring any valuable items on the test day.

  • Candidates do not need to bring passport-size photos on test day as the staff will take every candidate's photo as part of their registration process.

Rules & Instructions for IELTS Centres in India

All IELTS candidates must be aware of the exam's rules and regulations. There are severe rules in place, and all candidates must follow them to avoid disqualification.

Do’s 

  • Provide acceptable identification proof when registering for the speaking exam.

  • The passport number, signature, date of birth, and photograph must all match the information on your passport and national ID.

  • Bring your identity proof as well as your passport or national ID (Voter ID, Aadhaar card, Driving license).

  • Make sure all of your electronic devices are switched off and placed outside the testing area, along with any other personal things. Any applicant who does not switch off their phone or maintains one on them will be disqualified.

  • On test day, notify the invigilator or test supervisor immediately if any conditions interfere with your performance in any way.

Don’ts 

  • Do not imitate or have someone impersonate you.

  • Do not try to imitate or cheat another candidate's work.

  • Do not use a dictionary, spell checker, electronic recorder, Bluetooth devices, or mobile phones throughout the test. Anyone who breaks this rule will be disqualified and asked to leave.

  • Do not speak to other applicants once the test has begun.

  • During exam time, refrain from smoking or eating.

  • No component of the test should be attempted to be recreated in any format or medium. Candidates' test results will be invalidated if they are caught indulging in such activities.

  • Exam papers, speaking task cards, response papers, and working papers should not be removed from the examination.

FAQs on IELTS Test Centers

How many IELTS centres are available in India?

IELTS centres are located in 75 cities across India. IDP Education, the conducting body of IELTS India, has a presence in 37 cities. Candidates must note that the availability of a slot at a particular IELTS test centre is based on the desired test date.

Where is the IELTS Test conducted in India?

IELTS is conducted in a number of major cities in India like Bangalore, Pune, Gurgaon, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai and many more. The IELTS centres for PBT and CBT are defined separately and can be selected at the time of registration. However, IELTS Online allows students to take the exam from the comfort of their homes. The test will have the same material and format as the present paper-based and computer-delivered IELTS tests.

How to check the availability of IELTS centres in India?

You may either register for your IELTS exam online or in person at your nearest IELTS branch. You will be prompted to choose your preferred city and date when you register for the IELTS exam. The dates of the tests will differ depending on the location and type of exam. The test is conducted at multiple locations in different states throughout the year.

What does ID verification at an IELTS centre include?

You must bring your ID to your designated IELTS centre for verification. It should be the same ID that you used to book the test and should be original, valid (unexpired) and include a recognisable photo of yourself. It includes a passport or National Identity Card. Confirm which kind of identification documents are accepted by contacting the IELTS exam centre.

Can I take IELTS at home?

Yes, IELTS has introduced a new concept called the IELTS Indicator for candidates who wish to take the IELTS exam at home. The test can be taken by any candidate who cannot take the test at different test centres, especially during COVID-19 lockdowns.

What if IELTS or the IELTS centre is not administered in my city?

IELTS is conducted in all major Indian locations and you may book any test centre nearest to you. If IELTS is not administered in your city then you may also give the IELTS Online which is a new online academic test from the comfort of your home. It has the same material and features as IELTS on paper and IELTS on a computer, taken at a test centre.

What are the facilities available for special candidates at IELTS exam centres?

Special arrangements will be available at IELTS centres for special candidates with relevant medical documents. Facilities available for special candidates include the following:

  • Extra time may be required for medical issues or newborn nursing.

  • Papers in Braille.

  • Special Listening CD with essential pauses and stops.

  • The Listening test with lip reading is a variation on the Listening exam.

  • Speaking task cards in Braille or enlarged print.

Is the IELTS speaking test conducted on the same day at the IELTS centre?

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of the test are always conducted consecutively, with no breaks in between. You have the option of scheduling your IELTS Speaking exam on a day that is convenient for you. The Speaking test can be done on the same day or up to three days before or after the test date.

Can I change my IELTS centre after registration?

Yes, all candidates can change/transfer/reschedule their IELTS centre after being registered. Candidates can reschedule their IELTS exam only if the test date is at least 15 days after the day of request for transfer. However, candidates can postpone for up to 34 days without giving a reason.

Can I cancel my IELTS exam and receive a refund?

Yes, you can cancel your IELTS exam and receive a refund. If you cancel your test between 14 and 5 days before the scheduled date, you will receive a refund of 50% of the total test charge. Cancellations made after this time will not be refunded.
