History, Affiliations & Rankings

Founded originally under the name San Diego Normal School in 1897, San Diego State University or SDSU started on a small 17-acre plot in Central San Diego and is the 3rd oldest in the California State University (CSU) system. It is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). SDSU has historically ranked high consistently, and is one of the few Universities in California to have accolades such as being ranked 181 by Forbes 2019-20 as Americas best colleges, 270 by Times Higher Education 2020 (American universities) and US News & World Report 2020 ranking being 127 nationally and also individual rankings for Business (99-131), Education (53), Engineering (141) and Nursing Masters (56).

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

With a massive urban campus setting in Central San Diego raking up 288 acres, the SDSU campus has 7 buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It houses 3 Liberal Arts colleges, 5 Vocational colleges in addition to eleven schools and the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management & Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy. With a wide variety of options to choose from, SDSU offers 190 bachelors, 91 masters and over 20 doctoral degree programs with the most popular ones being Business Administration, Management, Psychology, Health and Physical Education, Fitness, Criminal Justice, Biology, Biological Sciences, and Safety Studies.

Accomplishments & Alumni 

SDSU is proud of being the top contributor of US Fullbright Scholars with more than forty students being selected since 2005. It is also very proud of being the first to offer an MBA Global Entrepreneurship program across four universities across the globe. The university is also known to run the first-ever women's studies program in the nation. Furthermore, SDSU is also listed as one of America's Most Entrepreneurial Universities and has received above $190 million in research grants and funds to date. With over 1,25,000 alumni and over 10,000 active members at any given moment, SDSU's alumni mentoring program has successfully connected over seven thousand students with suitable mentors. Some Public figures and prominent names to have graduated from SDSU are Ellen Ochoa (engineer and former astronaut), Julie Kavner (actress and voice actor in The Simpsons), 14th Chief of Staff-US Air Force Merrill McPeak, Courtney Friel (Fox News) and Kathleen Kennedy (film producer and president Lucasfilm).

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

Ranking top-10 nationwide for ethnic and racial diversity, SUDU's strong and vibrant student population reflects the university's exceptional commitment to inclusion, diversity, and non-discrimination. With over 400 international students entering the system this year, SDSU's international student numbers amount to up to 8.3 percent of the total student population. Almost 7.3% of the students are of Asian origin, 4% African American and 5.9% of Filipino origin. SDSU has strong corporate partnerships across the globe with Intel, Qualcomm, Invitrogen, Microsoft and KPMG on their permanent list. Some other big names to recruit from SDSU are Apple, Northrop Grumman, General Atomics, Marriott, Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Navy, Geico, Ernst & Young, 3M, SPAWAR and City of San Diego.
