History, Affiliation, and Rankings

Humboldt State Normal School began as a teacher's college on June 16, 1913, which was named after the famous German scientist Alexander Von Humboldt. Humboldt State Normal School classes began on April 6, 1914, with 62 students in a small building near the rural bottoms of Arcata. Going through many changes by 1974 this college got its name as Humboldt State University. 
HSU is affiliated with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Senior College and University Commission, certifying the quality and effectiveness of Humboldt's degree programs and educational activities. 

It is ranked #37 among the Best Regional Universities 2020 in the West by US News and World Report 2020 Edition.

Infrastructure, Campus, and Courses

Along with the main campus, HSU has many education-related places which include an ocean-side marine biology research center, a wildlife care facility, a public natural history museum, a public art gallery, a bay-side aquatics facility, a  beautiful mountain-top astronomy observatory, ocean-going marine research and teaching vessel (Coral Sea), and a demonstration forest (Arcata Community Forest).

The location of the university embellishes the North Coast, between the Pacific Ocean and ancient redwood forests. The university is divided into three colleges:  Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences with the College of Natural Resources and Sciences and the College of Professional Studies. It offers 48 types of bachelor's degrees, 12 different master's degrees, 61 minors, and 13 credential programs. Popular courses include Biological Sciences, Business Administration and Management, Psychology, Health and Physical Education/Fitness, and Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies.

Accomplishments & Alumni  

The institution is also known and ranked among Best Value Schools (#43), Top Performers on Social Mobility (tie) (#41),  Top Public Schools (#14), and Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs (#75). The university is known for its outstanding programs in natural resources and sciences, as well as leadership in sustainability. 
It has some very well-known alumni like Kenneth Fisher, Stephen Hillenburg,  Martin Wong, Raymond Carver, Wendell Hayes, Dave Harper, and Dean L. Bresciani.

Student Diversity and Visiting companies  

The student diversity of this university is 62% Hispanics, 47% California Hispanic, 43% American Indian/ Alaska Native & 38% Asian/ Asian American. With about 2% of the students from countries around the world, the students find the university to be fulfilling their academic goals. HSU Follows up with Handshake, a platform that helps students, alumni & employers by personalized job recommendations & keeping them updated with career fairs and events.it also helps them with managing on-campus interviews with top companies like Ernst and Young, Mc Kinsey, PWC, Google, Microsoft, etc.
