The University of Debrecen is the oldest continuously operating institutions in Hungary that was founded in 1538 as the College of Debrecen. It is a public university located in Debrecen, the largest city outside Budapest, Hungary. It is also the largest institution of higher education in Hungary in terms of student enrollment. University of Debrecen is a well-known university for higher education. Both medical and non-medical courses are offered at the university. The medical programmes are accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO), Medical Councils of India(MCI) and various other bodies of different countries like the USA, UAE, Ireland, Israel etc. The QS World University Rankings of the University of Debrecen ranges between 521-530.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
University of Debrecen has a total of eight campuses. The two main campuses are located in Debrecen and the majority of the courses are offered here. Students have an option to choose from a wide range of courses at a Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Currently, the University of Debrecen offers more than 80-degree programmes taught in English under various disciplines. These courses are conducted by 14 Faculties divided into different fields of studies like Engineering, Economics and Business, Medicine, Dentistry, Health, Science & Technology etc. All degree programmes are conducted according to the European Qualifications Framework of the Bologna Process.
Accomplishments & Alumni
University of Debrecen is the first university in Hungary to receive the highest degree of the Higher Education Qualification Prize in 2007 awarded to the most reputable Hungarian higher education institutions. The university is continuously ranked among top 500 universities in the world in the list of The World University Ranking, QS World University Ranking and by various other global rankings organisations and magazines. Medicine and Agriculture & Forestry are the best courses offered at University of Debrecen.
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
University of Debrecen has around 28,000 students enrolled in various courses among which over 6,900 are international students from across 110 countries. The outstanding quality education and options for students to choose from a wide of English language degree programme are the main reasons why the University of Debrecen is able to attract a maximum number of international students for higher education in Hungary. The courses offered at the University of Debrecen are practically oriented and students are trained to meet the needs of industries and recruiters. Students get an opportunity to take internships and training from cal and national companies that are in partnership with the University of Debrecen.
COVID-19 Response
University of Debrecen has decided to start the academic year 2021- 22 as a regular one. However, the final decision will also depend on the guidelines defined by the government. In case the university does not start a regular semester the classes will be conducted online and the same will be communicated to students.
The enrolment for 2021-22 will also depend on whether the course is conducted in regular mode or online mode.
University of Debrecen has taken all safety measures within the campus. Regular cleaning, hand sanitisers in the corridor, GP service etc are implemented within the campus.
All members of the University of Debrecen are asked to wear masks all the time and maintain personal hygiene.
Hostel facilities are available for international students with safety measures and guidelines be followed by students.
The medical check-up is compulsory for all students before arriving at the University. Required documents and form need to be submitted by the students on arrival at the campus.
University of Debrecen also provides mental health counselling to international students, if required.

The Stipendium Hungaricum academic Scholarship is funded by the Hungarian government to support international students to study at a Hungarian institute. The scholarship is available for any student who is enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programmes. Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship is a prestigious award a student receives as one can study for free at the University of Debrecen if he/she receives the scholarship.
Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship covers the following:
Tuition fee for the entire course of Study
Monthly Grant
Accommodation Expenses
Free medical insurance for students enrolled in B.Sc, M.Sc or PhD programme
Application Process
International students can apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship by filling in the online application form on the official website of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship.
The candidate must select the university while applying for a Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship. Select the University of Debrecen and submit the application along with other necessary application documents.

The Global Study Awards is funded by the ISIC Association, Studyportals and British Council IELTS to support talented and highly motivated candidates to study at top universities. The candidate must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Global Study Awards.
Must be motivated to contribute to society through their studies.
Must be committed towards the career.
Must have an interest in intercultural understanding and exchange.
Value: The maximum amount of scholarship received by an individual is £10,000
Eligibility
The candidate must meet the following criteria to receive the Global Study Awards:
Musta be an international student
Must have take IELTS
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be enrolled in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate studies at the participating institutes
Must have an offer letter from the university
Application Process
Candidates can apply for the scholarship through the official page of the Global Study Awards. The application process for the 2021 session is now closed. However, candidates can pre-register on the official website for future updates.
Non- medical students in 2nd years of studies at the University of Debrecen can apply for tuition fee reduction directly. The applicant must meet the following criteria to be considered for the scholarship:
Must have achieved a minimum GPA of 4.0 in each of the previous semesters at the university.
Must submit an application form for tuition fee reduction.
Students enrolled in the International Foundation Year, Basic Medicine Course and PhD course are not eligible for fee reduction.
Value: Upto 20% fee reduction form 2nd year tuition fee of the course
