In 1836, the university was founded as Emory College in Oxford, Georgia, by the Methodist Episcopal Church, which was named in honour of Methodist bishop John Emory. The private research university in Atlanta, Georgia, is the second-oldest private institution of higher education in Georgia and is among the fifty oldest private universities in the United States. Emory University is ranked 21st among national universities in the United States and 71st among global universities by U.S. News & World Report 2020. In 2017/18, Emory University was 98th among global universities and 19th in the United States in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is in collaboration with some of the well-known organisations like ACE, AAU, SACS, ORAU, NAICU and IAMSCU. As per the Wall Street Journal survey, the university was ranked 17th among colleges and universities in the United States.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The University Campus is spread across 56 acres of land. It was initially planned and built by the famous architect Henry Hornbostel. The campus is covered with greenery and is densely populated with maple and oak groves. The Emory University campus holds one of the largest inventories, the Energy and Environmental Design in the United States. Emory University has a number of courses that are categorised into 9 faculties. Few of them are the School of Law, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, School of Theology and the School of Technology. The Emory College of Arts and Sciences offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.S) undergraduate academic degrees. Furthermore, the Departments include Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Classics, Comparative Literature, Computer Science, Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Quantitative Theory and Methods and many more.
Accomplishments & Alumni
Emory University also offers a five-year dual degree programme in engineering, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and a dual master's degree in social work with the University of Georgia.The University has more than 149,000 alumni, with 75 alumni clubs established across 20 countries. It has an outstanding list of alumni that include Alben Barkley (35th VP of the United States), Thomas Milton Rivers (Director of Rockefeller Institute), Kenneth Cole (Kenneth Cole Productions' founder), Kim Dae-Jung (8th President of South Korea), Bobby Jones (Renowned Golfer), Sonny Carter (Famous NASA Astronaut) and Peter Buck (a guitarist in REM band).
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
Out of the almost 1400+ freshmen enrolled in fall 2019, 30% were Caucasian, 24% were Asian, 14% were Black/African American, 13% were Latinx/Hispanic, 13% were International. Emory University's total enrollment for fall 2018 was over 15000+ students, with 8000+ undergraduates and 7000+ graduate and professional students. Students come from all 50 states across the US and from over 100 different countries. Companies like Accenture, American Express, Bank of America, Google, Home Depot, PWC & JP Morgan recruit over hundreds of Undergraduates. On the other hand, Post-graduates are being extensively hired by companies such as Amazon, Cox Automotive, Coca Cola Company, Deloitte, FedEx, GE and several others.
