The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) was founded in 1876 as a result of two influential forces of the nineteenth century, firstly Iowa wanted to take care of orphans of its Civil War veteran secondly, Iowa needed a public teacher training institution. The institute is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC). It is ranked second in the "Best Regional Universities (Midwest)" list for public universities and 20th in the 2020 edition of Best Colleges is Regional Universities Midwest by the U.S. News & World Report's 2020 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook.
 
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
 
The university campus is spread over 3.642 square kilometer that includes a world-class wellness recreation center, a performing arts center that enhances the quality of student life, award-winning dining, NCAA Division I Athletics, concerts, sports clubs, intramurals, on-campus jobs, and more than 120 student organizations to provide a vibrant college experience to its students. UNI offers more than 90 majors through the colleges of Business Administration, Education, Humanities, Arts, and Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences and a graduate college.
 
Accomplishments & Alumni 

UNI is one of the seven members of the 2019 class of Excellence in Assessment designees, a national program focused at recognizing colleges and universities organizing comprehensive assessment of student learning outcomes as a means to drive internal improvement and advance student success. UNI’s football team manages to maintain its rank in the I-AA (FCS) top 25 almost every year for the last two decades. UNI won the NCAA Division I national championship as ISTC in 1949 in wrestling and NCAA Division II national championships in 1975 and 1978. The well-known names of the long alumni list include Bryce Paup who won the Defensive Player of Year Award by the Associated Press in 1995, Kurt Warner who was named NFL MVP by the AP among the many.

UNI provides a culture to its students which reflects and values the evolving diversity of society and promotes inclusion. The institute embraces 0.2% American Indian / Alaskan Native, 0.9% are Asian, 2.8% are Black / African American, 2.6% are Hispanic, 85.6% are White, 4.3% are International. The institution has a gender distribution of 42 percent male students and 58 percent female students. The university organizes routine employment fairs and events wherein companies like Amazon, Apple, Walmart, Nestle, Accenture and many more are invited to provide its students with an opportunity to build career connections.
