UK's New High Potential Individual Visa Route Launched

Latest Update (May 30, 2022):A new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa route has been launched by the UK for graduates of the worlds top 50 non-UK universities. After graduating from renowned universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the world's best graduates in topics such as science, engineering, and medical research will be encouraged to bring their expertise to the UK under the new route.

Successful applicants will be granted a two-year work visa, with those with a PhD receiving a three-year visa, with no need for a specific job offer.

The new HPI visa route will cost roughly GBP 715 and would allow close family members to join. To be qualified for this option, an applicant must have finances of at least GBP 1,270, according to the UK Home Office.

In addition, their institution must be located outside of the United Kingdom and must be ranked in the top 50 in at least two of the three rankings in the year the applicant received the qualification.

The HPI visa is aimed at getting an infinite number of exceptional graduates in their early career phases. They must show that they have a highly desired and capable pool of mobile talent from whom UK firms can hire.

However, overseas students, including Indians, studying at any of the UK's leading universities are already eligible for a Graduate visa, which allows them to stay for up to three years. This visa, often known as a post-study work visa, became available in July of last year.

These new visas, as per the UK government, are part of a series of changes to the country's immigration system following the country's withdrawal from the European Union (EU). Visas are granted based on the talents that students possess and the contribution that they can make, not on their nationality.

Rishi Sunak and Priti Patel, both of Indian descent, said the new "exciting" category under the post-Brexit points-based system is intended at recruiting the "best and brightest" talent from around the world, regardless of nationality.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak stated that the new visa offer will allow the UK to continue to attract the finest and brightest minds from around the world.

The UK government is set to open a 'highly selective' visa scheme on May 30, 2022, to target the graduates of the worlds top-ranking universities and intensify the skill base of the country. The participants will be able to work without sponsorship or study in the UK but will have to show the availability of GBP 1,270 for living expenses and have to meet the English language requirements.

The High Potential Individual visa route will focus on attracting high skilled overseas talents to support growth and innovation. The visa route will be left ajar for bachelors, masters and PhD holders of institutions on a Global Universities List of 50 institutions. The list has been published by UKs Home Office annually and generally features universities that are in 2 or 3 top rankings. The Times Higher Education World University rankings; Quacquarelli Symonds World University rankings; and The Academic Ranking of the World Universities are the three ranking institutions following which the list will be prepared.

Some of the top institutions that will find a place on the list is ETH Zurich, the University of Tokyo, the University of Toronto and other top US universities.

The application for visas must be made within five years of the degree being awarded. The visa will be valid for two years for bachelor's and master's degree holders and three years for PhD degree holders.

Safe and Legal Migration minister, Kevin Foster, issued a statement in March 2022, saying that the High Potential Individual visa will benefit the internationally mobile individuals who are at the early stage of their career and want to come to the UK. The country will be able to boost growth and drive the international competitiveness of the most innovative business sectors.

The new route will help to develop the skill base of the country but on the flip side, it will undermine the UK graduate route which requires students to first study in the UK and then get access to work. The participants in this visa can later switch to other routes and settle in the UK.
