Tokyo Tech’s Intensive Japanese Course Prepares Foreign Students for Higher Education in Japan

Japan’s Tokyo Tech has been offering an Intensive Japanese Course to International Students to help them develop proficiency in the language. The programme is offered twice a year for a period of four months, where students are trained through different experiences of the Japanese culture.

Tokyo Tech’s Intensive Japanese Course Prepares Foreign Students for Higher Education in Japan

On Feb 4th, 2021, six international students marked the completion of their Intensive Japanese Course at Tokyo Tech, after giving presentations and participating in the closing ceremony online.

The students had enrolled in the course in October of 2020, scheduled to study 3.5 hours over the weekdays for a duration of 4 months. The presentations of the students were delivered in Japanese to highlight their linguistic progress on completion of the programme.

The Institute for Liberal Arts in Tokyo Tech has been offering international students, short-term intensive courses, twice a year. The programme is designed to boost the students Japanese Language proficiency at a rapid rate. Even with the borders restrictions due to the pandemic, the winter session for the classes was deemed effective.

Students from across different parts of the world such as Europe, South East Asia and Middles East, were able to speak in Japanese on different topics that included the wines of Cyprus, the Jordanian Dance and Chinese sweets.

The audience for the presentations included a number of Tokyo Tech faculty members, students as well as 1st to 6th-grade students from Senzokuike Elementary School located in Tokyo. Previously, the intensive course students included an involved interaction with the local students in a bid to practice their skills, participate in cultural exchange and gain knowledge on Japans primary education. Though the pandemic restricted such activities in 2020, the online event permitted students to interact with the younger generations.

Fares El-Faouri, a participant, commented that the course had been an astonishingly beautiful experience. He highlighted his gratefulness for being able to learn Japanese in such a short period of time, which allowed Fares to actively engage in conversation with other Japanese students. Weam Fadel Numan and Alexandros Marios Makedonas also commented on the effectiveness of the intensive language course, which equipped them to hold conversations in Japanese, through a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

About Tokyo Techs Intensive Japanese Courses

The Intensive Japanese Courses organised by Tokyo Tech is held twice a year, aimed to equip international students, sponsored by the Japanese Government, to continue with their graduate studies. 2020 saw the intensive courses being held online in a bid to reduce the spread of the virus.

The programme has been developed to equip beginner-level students who have recently travelled to Japan. On completion of the programme, international students will be able to gain sufficient knowledge and proficiency in speaking basic Japanese. The programme also opens up opportunities for international students to experience Japanese culture through local elementary schools and tours of Kamakura.
