An MIT professor, Hari Balakrishnan, has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 Marconi Prize for the broad impact of his work and fundamental discoveries in wired and wireless networking, distributed systems and mobile sensing.
According to the press release published by the Marconi Society, Balakrishnan’s work has been responsible for keeping people safer while also making wireless communication and the internet more robust and efficient.
Chair of the Marconi Society and a 998 Marconi Fellow, Vint Cerf, acknowledged Balakrishnan’s “unique contributions” that helped shape “the course of research and discoveries in multiple fields, saved lives and facilitated better user experiences through network-based services. Among the reasons why Balakrishnan was selected as the ideal candidate for the 2023 Marconi Prize, Cerf highlighted Balakrishnan’s focus on scientific excellence and his humanitarian contributions.

Among the contributions of Hari Balakrishnan include his “influence in mobility and wireless through his research and entrepreneurship”, stated reports. One of his leading research at MIT was the CarTel mobile sensing system that collects and draws inferences from the sensors on mobile devices which led to “Balakrishnan’s latest successful entrepreneurial endeavour, CMT”.
Cambridge Mobile Telematics, or CMT, was founded by Hari Balakrishnan alongside Bill Powers and Sam Madden. CMT had been designed to make the roads and drivers of the world safer. The objective of CMT is to help millions of drivers to drive carefully with the motive of reducing road crashes.
The report by the Marconi Society highlighted Balakrishnan’s efforts in becoming one of the first to understand the interactions between wireless and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Balakrishnan was able to highlight the causes behind poor wireless TCP performance, which became the gold standard for understanding the topic worldwide. Moreover, the research further helped improve the performance, which billions of users now benefit the world over.
