Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Indian Medical Students Can't Continue Studies in Another College as per NMC

Indian medical students returning from Ukraine to their nation may need to face a regulatory roadblock ahead, as migrating out of medical school from one college or university to another is not allowed as per the regulations of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

As per the regulation, the entire course, training or internship shall be done outside India in the same institution throughout the course period. It also means that any medical training and internship cannot be done in India or in any other country.

The former head of the National Board of Examinations Bipin Batra said that the Indian government will be needed to intervene for the continuation of education of our nation's youth in Ukraine.

As per Batra, several batches of students are stranded in over 30 medical institutions in Ukraine and they are all seeking the support of the Indian Government for the continuation of their education or relocation elsewhere amidst the ongoing crisis.

On the other hand, Doctors' body Indian Medical Association President Sahajanand Pd. Singh assured that he will discuss the matter with NMC over the regulation that restricts Indian students to pursue their education.

As per reports, medical students pursuing medicine from universities abroad have to clear the screening test. Once they clear the screening test, the students will be treated equally to any other Indian medical graduate for further practice and employment as a doctor in India.

For the unversed, Ukraine has over 33 medical colleges, some of which have the highest accreditation rating by renowned education agencies. Additionally, the country has 28 medical colleges, officially recognised as per the WHO directory of medical schools.

Ukraine turned out to be a preferred destination for medical students, especially for MBBS, as the medical colleges and universities of the foreign country have penetrated into the Indian market through a network of coaching institutions that hired agents as their representatives in India.

Earlier, when there was no screening test regulation, Indian students who completed their MBBS from Ukraine could easily get a job in their home country as the MBBS degree obtained from a Ukraine University was recognised by the MCI.
