Keeping with its immigration goals of yesteryears, Canada has announced its aim of welcoming an ambitiously high 1.3 million immigrants in the span of 3 years in a bid to support the post-pandemic growth.
As per the 2022-24 Immigration Levels Plan published on 14th Feb, the first since October 2020, Canadas federal government plans to bring in 431,000 permanent residents in 2022, meanwhile bringing in 447,000 in 2023, and keeping an objective of 451,000 permanent residents in 2024. However, previously, the goals of 2022 and 2023 were kept at 411,000 and 421,000 correspondingly.
Among the different nationalities that have achieved permanent residency in Canada include Indians, who are the biggest nationality, accounting for about 40% of the total number. The IRCC aims to welcome 83,500 new immigrants via the PNP programme in 2022, keeping PNP as the main admission programme for economic class immigrants. The Economic Times attributes Canadas employment growth to its immigration processes, which also have been among the main boosters of the economy in Canada. By welcoming over 405,000 new immigrants, Canada recorded the largest single-year increase in the countrys history.
The plan also revealed that 60% of the new immigrants will also be eligible to be classed as economic immigrants, who would be selected based on the skills and work experience they bring forward. All this is expected to amount to 1.14% of the total population in Canada by 2024.
