History, Affiliations & Rankings

Laurentian Universitys foundations were laid as early as in 1913 by the Society of Jesus in the name Collge du Sacr-Coeur. The college started granting degrees in 1957 as University of Sudbury. It was in 1960 that University of Sudbury College (Roman Catholic Church) and Huntington College (United Church) merged to become Laurentian University. In 1963 the federation was joined by Thorneloe College (Anglican). The university had partnered with Lakehead University in 2005 for Northern Ontario School of Medicine, which on the basis of legislation passed by the region's municipality in 2021 was severed. Nipissing University College and Algoma University College were also affiliated with the university and parted on achieving their own degree granting charters in 1967 and 2008 respectively. The institution also founded McEwen School of Architecture in 2013. Its current affiliations include AUCC, IAU, COU, AUFC, CVU, Ontario Network of Women in Engineering, USports, OUA, CBIE, CUP and OUSA.

Infrastructure, Campus and Courses

The university offers to its prospective and current students 107 undergraduate and 33 graduate programs to choose from. These programs are offered through the various academic buildings within the campus and the affiliated colleges. Apart from the academic buildings the institutions campus comprises eight residential facilities for the students out of which five are on the main campus. There is a separate residential facility for mature and married students. Additionally the campus has its own Fraser Auditorium, Ben Avery Sports facility and a private beach. There are five freshwater lakes which can be found within the campus. The university has its own radio frequency registered at 96.7 as CKLU-FM which broadcasts in both English and French language. Lambda is the English language newspaper and L'Orignal dchan is the French newspaper in circulation within campus. The university also has its own sports competition in the name of 705 Challenge Cup.

Accomplishments and Alumni

L'Association des universits de la francophonie canadienne is one of the associations with whom the institution is partnered with. The association is a community of regional universities and colleges and regularly creates partnership programs and affiliations for the benefits of the students. Northern Ontario School of Medicine is now a standalone university and Canadas first independent nursing school. The institutions contribution in helping the affiliated colleges have been immaculate throughout the years. These libreal yet far-sighted affiliations and networks have led to various research opportunities and accomplishments for the university. It is known to provide support in securing internal and external research sources for applicant research teams and is in affiliation with affiliated colleges and communities in research activities. Some of the notable alumni of the university could be named as Alex Baumann, Leo Gerard, Sharon Murdock, Andr Paiement, Marie-Paule Poulin, Sylvia Sweeney, John Willinsky and Akolisa Ufodike.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

SGA-AG is the resident student association of the university and provides guidance and support in both English and French languages. The bilingual background of the university has been quite helpful for the diversity and cultural support required by the students. The international population has a representation of around 13% in the campus of the university. There is a specific value and insistence placed on the empowerment of women, trangender and other building blocks of LGBT community. The university also has a communa partnership with the mining community of the region and maintains educational and cultural relations with the community. Moreover there is an empathetic and moral turpitude approach adopted by the institution by involving Animal Care and Ethical Certification in its research initiatives. There is also a separate counselling department for the career opportunities and probabilities.
