History, Affiliations & Rankings

Founded in 1907, Rice University is a private research university spread over on a 300-acre lush campus in Houston, Texas. The University was chartered out on May 18, 1891, by William Marsh Rice for promoting  Literature, Science, and Art as a present to the city of Houston. All the programs being offered by Rice have earned respective most reputed accreditation including NAAB, AACSB, ABET, etc. Times Higher Education ranks Rice University 105th rank in World University Rankings 2020 and 16th rank in the US Rankings 2020. According to the QS Global World Ranking 2020, the university ranks in 85th position.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Rice has 11 residential colleges, which have their own dining halls, public rooms, and dorms on campus; most of the first-year students and about 75 percent of all undergraduates reside at their associated colleges. It also has 250+ student-led clubs. Rice University provides access to more than 50 undergraduate majors across six streams of study which consists of architecture, engineering, humanities, music, natural sciences, and social sciences. 

Accomplishments & Alumni

The First humans to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, carried a lunar dust detector experiment devised by Rice professor Brian O’Brien. In one of the Apollo missions, NASA astronauts carried to the moon a larger self-contained ion detection experiment made by Rice professor John Freeman. That device is still on the lunar surface. Rice University was handed over the “NASA Ambassador of Exploration Award” awarded posthumously to President Kennedy on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Popular alumni include Lance Berkman, Howard Hughes, John Kline, Alberto Gonzales, Peggy Whitson, Caroline Shaw, Brian Armstrong, Fred C. Coach, and David Rhodes.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

Rice has set up the office of Diversity and inclusion to promote and ensure the university’s motto of inclusive education. The office ensures it by conducting a conclave of small groups of students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives and by actively pushing student-sponsored activities. Rice University maintains a student-faculty ratio of 6:1 for undergraduate students. Around 49% of the student population comes from other States and Minorities except for Texas and 11% international making it a popular choice amongst students outside Texas. Some of the top companies are Capital One, Dell, Deloitte Consulting, CenterPoint Energy, Chevron, ExxonMobil, EY, KPMG, The Boeing Company T-Mobile, Google, Cisco, Morgan Stanley, Dell, etc.
