University of East Anglia, UK Announces Scholarship for Creative Writing Applicants from India

The fully-funded Sonny Mehta India scholarship worth £28,500 was announced this year to mark the 50th birth anniversary of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, UK. Eligible students may apply for the scholarship on or before May 14, 2021, by visiting the official website of the university.

University of East Anglia, UK Announces Scholarship for Creative Writing Applicants from India

The UKs University of East Anglia has launched a fully-funded annual scholarship for students applying for its Creative Writing MA programme 2021. The Sonny Mehta India Scholarship worth 28,500 is open to budding Indian writers aimed at helping them improve their creative writing skills.

The scholarship was announced this year to mark the 50th birth anniversary of Creative Writing at UEA. It was the first course of its kind to have produced more prize-winning and published authors in the UK. Eligible students may apply for the scholarship on or before May 14, 2021, by visiting the official website of the university.

Eligibility Criteria for the Sonny Mehta India Scholarship 2021

Only those who meet the eligibility criteria mentioned below will be considered for the scholarship:

  • Should be a student from India, North Africa, the Indian subcontinent or the Middle East.

  • Should be applying for the postgraduate-level creative writing course at UEA.

  • Those who identify themselves as Roma in their application form may also apply.

  • Should demonstrate genuine financial need.

  • Should demonstrate extraordinary creative writing skills.

  • Should be self-funded.

Sonny Mehta was the chairman of Knopf Doubleday Group and editor-in-chief of a publishing house in the US Alfred A Knopf. Endowed by wife Gita Mehta, the scholarship was launched in memory of her husband.

Sonny Mehta, who published some of the most popular authors including one economic and eight English literature Nobel laureates, died in December 2019.

The Vice-Chancellor of UEA, Professor David Richardson said that this is a great contribution to the creative writing programme at the university, for which they are immensely grateful to Gita Mehta.

He added that Sonny Mehta was a very influential editor and publisher whose range and wisdom transformed the landscape of literature. At UEA, Mehtas call for excellence and inclusivity will be given utmost importance and more talented individuals will be welcomed.

Director of Creative Writing at UEA, Professor Henry Sutton said that the universitys creative writing programme acknowledges new voices from across the world and that contemporary writing should transcend borders, prejudices and boundaries.

The scholarship will help Indian students assist in fulfilling their dream of pursuing further studies at UEA.
