History, Affiliations & Rankings

With a rich 200+ year history and is the oldest in the state, The University of Michigan Ann Arbor was officially founded in 1817. It is also known as UMich, U of M, U-M or more commonly as UM. Initially operating from Detroit, the university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and also has academic affiliations with the Association of American Universities(AAU), Big Ten Academic Alliance(BTAA), Universities Research Association(URA) & the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities(APLU).

The University being one of the oldest in the US stands high on national and global rankings lists. It has nationally been placed at no.20(Forbes), no.27(Times Higher Education), no.25(US News & World Report) & no.26(Washington Monthly). It has a global ranking of no.17(US News & World Report), no.21(Times Higher Education = QS Rankings) & no.20(Academic Ranking of World Universities).

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

With roughly 500+ major buildings and many others which have been taken on lease, UM has one of the biggest networks of infrastructure in the nation with over 860 acres dedicated to the Ann Arbor Campus, which is further divided into 4 areas namely Central Campus(40 acres), Medical Campus, North Campus(800 acres) and South Campus. It also has several other off-campus facilities for faculty, students and alumni. These campuses are home to the 19 schools & colleges being run by UMich, namely the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; School of Medicine; College of Engineering; School of Law, School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, & the School of Music, Theatre & Dance among others

The most rewarding programs and streams, also the ones taken the most by students at U-M are Chemistry, Clinical Psychology, Computer Science, Biological Sciences, Earth Sciences, Nursing–Midwifery, Pharmacy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Affairs, Social Work & Sociology.

Accomplishments & Alumni

The University of Michigan Ann Arbor has many accomplishments, the most recent of which are receiving multiple awards and recognitions such as Carol Hollenshead Award, Circle Award - La Celebración Latina, Cornerstone Award, Distinguished Diversity Leaders Award, Ida Gray Award, Harold Johnson Diversity Service Award, and  Dr. Martin Luther King - Jr. Student Awards, to name a few.

The University is one of the oldest in the nation and is proud to have more than 5,00,000 living alumni. Historically, UM has proven to shell out sharp talent capable of making a big impact not just locally but globally. Some of the better-known names to have graduated from UMich are Gerald Ford(38th President of the US), Mike Duggan(75th Mayor of Detroit), Ben Carson(17th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development), Arif Alvi(13th President of Pakistan) & Clarence "Kelly'' Johnson(Lockheed Skunk Works) among a huge list of public figures. Another noteworthy fact is that all crew members of both the Gemini 4(2nd crewed spaceflight) & the Apollo 15(4th mission to land on the moon) missions were U-M graduates making those an all U-M crewed missions.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

UM is committed to inclusion and equity and encourages diversity throughout the academic community. Most of the university's students and faculty are directly or indirectly engaged in various measures to ensure diversity and safety of all students, many have also won awards and recognition for their involvement. With both local and international students from 50 states of the US and 122 countries around the world, U Mich's international student population stands at 2051 students and 15% of the total student population being of Asian origin. Gender demographics at UM are 50% female and 50% male students.

The University, also being one of the oldest in the country is globally known for its ties with various Industries and Corporates & therefore provides access to top-notch careers and job opportunities. Organizations such as NASA, JPL, Thomson Reuters, General Motors Milford Proving Grounds, Toyota Technical Center, IBM Watson Health, Ford Motor Company, Zingerman’s Family of Businesses and Trinity Health regularly hire graduates from university placements at UM. The University of Michigan is also one of the biggest job providers to UM students.
