Opened in 1991 in downtown Harrisburg, it is also called The Capital College, located in Lower Swatara Township, 9 miles (15 km) south of Harrisburg. In QS Rankings, it ranks in the top 50 in eighth subject areas. Penn State ranks among the top 200 institutions in 29 subjects. The University ranks ninth in agriculture and forestry; 12th in materials science; 10th in geography; 25th in Earth and marine sciences; 27th in education; 33rd in mechanical engineering; 40th in biological sciences; and 46th in communication and media studies. Penn State Harrisburg's teacher education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
Penn State Harrisburg is spread across a 218-acre suburban campus. The campus is built on the site of the decommissioned Olmsted Air Force Base. In the past several years, major construction has been undertaken, expansion of the Science and Technology Building, the college added a state-of-the-art library, new apartment-style housing for 431 students, an expanded food court, and Town Square for student activities, and an indoor aquatics center. As a college and graduate school of the Pennsylvania State University, Penn State Harrisburg grants associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. offering 24 master's degree programs, as well as doctoral programs in Adult Education, American Studies, and Public Administration. The most sought after courses at the university are Engineering, Sciences, Computer Sciences, Business, and Literature.
Accomplishments & Alumni
The School of Business Administration presented its Alumni Achievement Award to E. Philip Wenger, who holds a bachelor’s degree in finance (1979) and a master of business administration (1987) from Penn State Harrisburg. Kathy Marley-Dunbar received the School of Humanities’ Alumni Achievement Award. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in American studies from Penn State Harrisburg (1989 and 1993).
