History, Affiliations & Rankings

The foundation of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was laid in 1989 by some of the leaders of  Hong Kong when they realised the need of a research-focused university in the Clear Water Bay city of Hong Kong for its future. It was officially founded in 1991 as an international research university. The vision was to make HKUST as the centre of knowledge advancement, economic growth and financial hub of Asia and the past three decades the university has burgeoned to be among the top universities of the world. The QS World University ranking 2021 of  Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is 27. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The vibrant and attractive campus of HKTU makes it a student-friendly place for study and stay. One can benefit from various facilities available in the campus that includes playgrounds for sports, wellness and recreation centres, students residence, the Center for the Arts, well-maintained library, conference room, music rooms etc. Housing and residential facilities are available at HKUST campus. Facilities available for on-campus residents include cafeteria, reflection room, recreation areas, transportation and above all a healthy and peaceful atmosphere. A wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, interdisciplinary courses and research-based advanced studies in different areas of studies are offered at HKUST. These courses are conducted at the School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Business and Management, School of Humanities and Social Science, Interdisciplinary Programs Office, HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and HKUST Institute for Public Policy. 

Accomplishments & Alumni

HKUST has already set a mark for itself in a short span of thirty years of establishment. This can be figured out by its ranking and recognition granted by various top rankers. Like, HKUST was ranked No. 1 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2020.  Greater China Global Employability University Ranking 2019 of HKUST was 10th. Consistent top ranking of HKUST is possible because of the excellence it has achieved in the teaching and research work under the guidance of some of the renowned faculty members. Also, the impact of HKUST’s work for the society whether it is for the environment, ar, creativity or health is highly commendable. Students who graduate from HKUST automatically become a member of the HKUST alumni body. There are also some alumni associations/ groups that are voluntarily established alumni for collaboration even after the completion of studies from the university. HKUST alumni are eligible to use the sports facilities, library, wifi connection any time they visit the campus. Most alumni members are self-motivated people who never give a second thought to serve the university at the times of need. 

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

Every year, over 16,000 undergraduate and more than 5800 postgraduate students are enrolled at HKUSTincluding 400+ international students. Top companies and corporates recognised by HKTSU students and offer internships and job opportunities to them after graduation. Strong collaboration of HKUST with top industrialists and companies is a key factor for job opportunities soon after the completion of studies from the university. PhD students are usually recognised for their research work and get an opportunity to represent themselves at an international level. 

COVID-19 Response 

HKUST is known to handle the global challenges efficiently and effectively through strong collaboration among the faculty, staff, students and the university authorities. evolving COVID-19 situation has been challenging and to ensure safety and well being of everyone, HKUST has taken the following decisions:

  • Classes having strength of more than 75 students will be held in real-time online mode and for the Spring term (February 1 to May 28, 2021) will be held in real-time online mode. 

  • After the Add-Drop period of the Spring Term i.e February 1 to May 28, 2021, the classes may be covered into mixed format (combination of online and on-campus) depending on the situation. 

  • Lab classes and other classes that require in-person teaching will be held on campus with necessary measures like social distancing, face covering, proper sanitation and personal hygiene.

  • HKUST has advised students who are not in Hong Kong to not make any travel plans and take the classes in online mode.

HKUST Scholarships for International Students

Some scholarships are offered by HKUS to attract outstanding students from across the world to pursue higher education. The scholarship is usually offered by an individual School, Department or University Scholarship Committee. Some of the scholarships are also awarded based on competition. 

Some scholarships are also offered to outstanding postgraduate and undergraduate students who are studying at HKUST. The number of scholarships offered is increasing day by day by support from outside fund donors. 

Most of the awards are merit-based scholarships are some financial-based scholarships are awarded on demand and need of the student.

University Admissions Scholarship Scheme for GCEAL/ International AL Qualification Holders

It is a scholarship offered to international students who are GCEAL/ International AL qualified and has attained A* in at least 3 ALL subjects. Detail of the scholarship for 2021/ 22 Academic year is given in the following table:

How to Apply?

There is no need to fill in a separate application for the scholarship. GCEAL /International AL qualification students are automatically considered for the awards. The results are verified before granting the award.

Selected students are informed by the university about the receipt of the award. 

Scholarship Scheme for International/Asian Olympiad Gold Medalists

HKUST grants scholarships to students who are International Olympiad Gold Medalists or Asian Olympiad Gold Medalists. Detail of the scholarship for 2021/ 22 Academic year is given in the following table:

How to Apply?

There is no need to apply for a scholarship. Students are selected based on the nominations by the School or Program’s Office for the specific academic year. 

HKSAR Government Scholarship 2021 

HKSAR Government Scholarship is open for non-local students and local students who are admitted to undergraduate courses at HKUST.  Students enrolled in full-time studies at the School of Business & Management, School of Engineering, School of Humanities & Social Science, School of Science or Interdisciplinary Programs Office are considered for a scholarship.

The award is renewed if the student maintains a CGA of 3.00 or above. 

Value of Scholarship

The scholarship amount is HK$ 40,000 - 80,000 per year. It is renewable for up to 4 years. 

Local students are awarded HK$ 40,000 per year and Non-local students are awarded HK$ 80,000 per year. 

How to Apply?

Students are directly shortlisted for the scholarship based on academic merit and performance in the admission interview. The other scholarships available for international students enrolled at the HKUST is given in the following table:
