Emily Carr University was originally established as Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts in 1925 and it was in 195 that the institution started granting Undergraduate degrees in Fine Arts and Design. In the year of 2008, the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia amended its University Act and recognised the institute as a full independently administering university. It is the only independent school dedicated to Arts and design in the province of British Columbia and is ranked among the top 50 universities of the world for Art and Design. ECU is affiliated with Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) and Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) Universities Canada.
Infrastructure, Campus and Courses
ECU originally moved to Granville Island in 1980 as a provincial institute. There was a building constructed additionally in 1995. The campus was moved to Vancouver in 2017. The university has to its credit satellite campuses for aboriginal students. The university provides residential facilities in the Centre for Digital Media through the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. The university currently offers undergraduate degrees in Culture and Cultural Practices, Sustainable Design, Photography, Industrial Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Animation, Film and Screen Arts, Fine Arts, and many other Art and Design courses. Masters or Graduate degree can also be applied for in Visual Arts and Design.
Accomplishments and Alumni
ECU has also collaborated with other institutions and authorised establishments for Research purposes. In 2009, the institution collaborated with Kerner Studios for establishment of a stereoscopic 3-D research studio. Moreover, the institute partnered with 2 Canadian Research Chairs in 2014 and another in 2015. ECU has been an alma mater to various notable professionals in industrial environments of Arts and Design, some of them are Kate Ali, E.J. Hughes, Julian Lawrence, Heather Spears, Jeff Chiba Stearns, Ola Volo, Ron Burnett, Randy Lee Cutler, Landon Mackenzie, Ian Wallace and Rita Wong. There are also certain alumnus who have attained the label of emeriti.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The total number of international students make up for 25% of the population of ECU and there is an effect among administration to draft this population as diversely as possible. The institution has an independent policy for the growth and inclusion of students from aboriginal communities. There is also a program of education support affected by the administration through which contribution of funds can be made in order to support the education of indigenous, black and of colour students. The funds are appropriated on an award basis among the applicants. There are various types of support systems extended for the students by the university’s administration. Among these included is Career Guidance and Counselling.
