The University of Washington (UW), a public research university in Seattle, Washington, is considered to be amongst the best public universities to study in, around the Seattle region. Founded in 1861 the University of Washington operates an early entrance program and a Transition School . In 2018, the Academic Rankings of World Universities, ranked the university 14th, worldwide. It has bagged the 59th rank in the 2019 edition of Best Colleges and National Universities. As per the US News Rankings, UW has been ranked #62 in National Universities and #52 in Most Innovative Schools 2020. Meanwhile, the QS WUR 2020 ranked the university at #68 in the world.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
Spread over 703 acres of land, the University of Washington offers a variety of bachelor's, masters and doctoral degrees through the 140 departments within the university. As the flagship institution among the six public universities in Washington State, it is known for its research in medicine, science, as well as its highly-competitive computer science and engineering programs. The most popular majors at the University of Washington include Social Sciences, Business, Management, Marketing, Engineering; and Computer & Information Sciences & Support Services, Related Support Services, and Biological & Biomedical Sciences. The University of Washington has received many accolades and accomplished many goals, which include student goals along with institutional goals. Among them, QS Rankings recognised the UW as one of the top 60 universities with impeccable Graduate Employability. It has also maintained itself to be among the top 15 in subjects like Nursing, Library and Information Management, Dentistry and Earth and Marine Sciences. The university has been home to many notable alumni and faculty members, including 20 Nobel Prize laureates and numerous Pulitzer Prize winners, Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, Marshall Scholars, as well as members of other distinguished institutions. Furthermore, Baskin Robbins co-founder Irv Robbins, Nobel Prize-winning biologist Linda B. Buck; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson and MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe, are considered to be the real gems of UW.
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
With more than 54,000 students enrolling at the university every year, the University of Washington boasts of being an institution with one of the most diverse student bodies in the US, with 17% of the students being International Students, while 33% of the students belong to minority groups. The University of Washington had 46000+ total enrollments as of Autumn 2016, making it the largest university on the west coast by student population despite its selective admissions process. The University of Washington continues to benefit from its deep historical ties and major collaborations with numerous technological giants in the region who even participate in the campus placements, such as Amazon, Boeing, Nintendo, and particularly Microsoft. Paul G. Allen, Bill Gates and others spent a significant time at Washington computer labs for a startup venture before founding Microsoft.
