The University of Iowa, founded in 1847, is a Tier-1 public research university in the US. It is the oldest and the second largest university in the state of Iowa, organised into a total of 12 colleges along with the most-acclaimed medical centres in the country. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and the Big Ten Conference. According to the U.S. News & World Report rankings, the university is ranked 34th among the best public universities and 88th in its national rankings. The rankings also feature 10 of its graduate programs among the US’ top 10. Globally, the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings 2021 placed the university within the range of 201-250.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located in Iowa city alongside the Iowa River, the University of Iowa is spread across a total area of 1,880 acres, which includes over 500 student organizations, 24 NCAA athletic teams, 10 residence halls, eight campus libraries along with a digital library, student health libraries, etc. The university offers over 100 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional programs in more than 200 areas of study including business, economics, management, education, engineering & computing, health sciences, language, culture & society, life & natural sciences and so on. As of Fall 2020, the University of Iowa recorded a total enrollment of 31,730, with the majority enrolled in undergraduate programs.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Exceeding 250,000 alumni, the University of Iowa boasts a long list of graduates who are actively contributing to different communities and professions across the world. Overall, the university has educated a good number of dentists, physicians, pharmacists, teachers and administrators in the state. Some of the notable alumni include Terry Branstad, James Cartwright, George Gallup, Mary Beth Hurt, Ashton Kutcher, Marilynne Robinson,Tennessee Williams, Gene Wilder, among others. Today, 18.3% of the students enrolled in the university are first generation students and it is also the first public school to admit men and women on an equal basis.

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

The university welcomed over 2,000 international students in Fall 2020, representing 7.8% of the total enrolment count. It believes in creating a diverse community and building an accessible and inclusive campus that values all unique social identities. 95% of graduates of the University of Iowa receive a job offer or are accepted into a grad school within six months of graduation. According to records, the college of engineering has a placement rate of 94%, nursing has 98%, both pharmacy and business have 97%, liberal arts and sciences has 94% and education has 92%. Some of the leading companies that have hired recent Iowa graduates include CNN, Google, Peace Corps, Pearson, ACT Inc., NASA, IBM, John Deere, amongst others.
